Considering a 2016 M4

Hello everyone,

I am considering buying a 2016 M4. The car has executive package and manual transmission. 1 owner 25Kish miles.

What are the common problem areas? Anything specific I need to look for?

Thanks, any input welcome.

Matt

Unless you're pushing big horsepower upgrades, I wouldn't say there's anything you really need to worry about, especially at 25K miles. Normal first upgrades are filters/charcoal-removal.

The S55 is absolutely robust in its stock state. Crank hub issues only really exist in higher-HP cars. Any reason why you're going with a 2016 vs something newer (at least with the F80s, Carplay wasn't standard until 2018)?

Would get 2018+ as you get LCI.

I have a 16 M4 with 29k miles now. I'm the 2nd owner. It's been fantastic. The one thing I would check is the top mount intercooler to make sure it's retaining coolant. While I have yet to experience a leak, it is something other owners have reported and my dealer is aware that it can happen. Most often no error codes are thrown so the problem can go unnoticed for a while. Good luck!

Ok, thanks.

I am open to anything 2016-2019.

I would prefer 1 owner with regular maintenance documented. However I am flexible.

I looked at a 2018 at the local BMW dealership that was a decent deal but the car had no maintenance records at all with 30K on it. Why would anyone drive the car without service for 30K unless they did a diy? Hard to comprehend for type A personality like myself.

I'd say save a ton of money and get pre lci- the differences are very minor, and only an f8x owner that's into cars can tell… like the lights are a little different— lci loses angel eyes and imho that's a negative

If you need android auto or car play there are solutions for $200

Check the charge cooler fluid. Hopefully that's not an issue or the cooler has already been replaced under warranty.

2016 manual owner also. did the crank hub, silicone charge and j pipe as precautionary.

one of the best things i did recently was updating the idrive from 4 to 6 to get carplay. i went with easybimmercoding. i highly recommend this as one of your first mods.

Ok, just so I understand it correctly, you can update the software to get the same/similar features as the 2018 and later models?

I had a 2017, the owner didn't spec CarPlay. BimmerTech was able to code it in (after I installed an antenna into the back of the radio) to give me wireless CarPlay like the F80s that had CarPlay. 2018 is just the first year <all> of them came with it as a standard option, iirc.

Mechically the car is the same if I can recall. It's just going to be creature comforts that will be different.

If you go with a 2016, you can put the money you save into maintenance and/or mods.

- Charge pipes and j pipes upgrades
-plugs
- BMC filters or intakes
- Hub bolt capture kit
- straight pipe resonator back
- oil/filter change
- transmission and rear diff oil change to have a base
- front brakes possibly, brake fluid flush

I went with a 2016 that the previous owner had done almost everything I would have eventually done with the car, H&R springs, spacers, front, side and rear CF! I ended up doing the front brakes/rotors, rear brakes, DCT,rear diff, oil change, charge and j pipe upgrade, hub bolt capture, BMC filters, and plugs! I am going to do a upper cooler upgrade and I am done! The 2016 is not a 2006, so it has all the creature comforts you need and if you want carplay you can get for a lot cheaper than paying for 2018 model!

This. If you plan to keep it stock you could go for a 2018+ with warranty left. But if you plan to mod you will get a lot more for your $ with a 2016.

What's the CarPlay solution?
If you have a 2015, you can get an MMI box from aliexpress, just search f80 CarPlay mmi - I've had it installed for a year and it's perfect CarPlay, connects automatically, no lag or stutter and cameras work , 2016 and above you can have it coded remotely

I automatically assumed he was gonna mod it - save money and mod a 2016

I have a 2016 M4. I'm the second owner and have 42k mikes on it.

I've done all maintenance myself and have spent less than $3k on everything including tires. 0 issues. 0 complaints. I'm going to drive it till the wheels fall off

And then I'll get another one.

And, I have a 24k/24months warranty, also! I think better than BMW, because this company covers seals and gaskets!

Yes you can do some of this or all of it. Depends on how well the car has been maintained. Just got a 2016 lease back then CPO with full records and glad that I did a bit more research as car has been rock solid so far. BMW dealer when I got it back home and Tom @EAS says all looked good when they saw it and nothing touched under the hood they could tell. Biggest thing I think with these cars is to try to do your homework on the car ahead of time...they all have histories to some degree just like your wife or fiancee...just a matter of knowing a bit more before you make that final commitment as one independent shop guy told me about a 911 I was about to buy...you just hope you can live with the history when you know it! .

Otherwise pretty solid cars and 2016+ CarPlay upgrade is easy as well as flashing the car to get a bunch of other stuff like folding mirrors and such. Nav upgrade? Easy tool 20 mins using USB from online vender. Other mods easily available from many on the forum...you're on the right board to find and get advice. Good luck and post pics of your car when you find "the one!"
