Given you get 45 to 52 from your 420i, i'd say you'll get 25 to 31 in the M4. I got 38 on a trip to the midlands from Manchester once thanks to the M6 speed limits. That's nothing to be proud of, of course!

I drive mostly city & B roads. 99% of the time I get around 21 / 22 mpg.
On the motorway I can get high 20's. I once got 32 mpg on a drive to Edinburgh. I was amazed. I wasn't trying to drive economically. So as I say 21 to 23 is norm.

I managed a 38mpg run down to see my sister (about 200 miles). It is extremely hard work and quite the test for myself.

Including this run and over 3750 miles i’m at an average of 24.x

Had it a day, done a fair bit of mixed driving and managed to scrape 36MPG on my town/motorway 50/50 commute. It's looking like it's going to be a 25-31 average as you've said overall! Spot on.

It's got 97RON Sainsbury's fuel in it at the moment, the dealer filled it up for me. Manual says 98 is normal, Shell 99 is recommended but 95 is the bare minimum. Not sure how much of a difference stepping up to 98RON will make or even 99. I imagine this will open a rabbit hole of opinions on the best fuel to use in the M cars.

97-99 is all fine in my view and experience - I use either BP (so 97, as it is the one I pass all the time) or Tesco Momentum (99) or Sainsburys (97). I favour Tesco in terms of value and being 99. I think you'd only notice the difference between any of those in tenths of a second on a track...

I could never bring myself to pay Shell prices - just seems like setting fire to pound notes with no benefit... I know many M drivers will swear anything but Shell will halve your performance and melt your engine

Average is 17-18 I drive in the city with sport and in manual shifting mode

UPDATE - Average MPG seems to be around 31MPG with a good mix of motorway, town and back road fun.

Managed this on the way up to Leeds a week ago. Couldn't be happier with the car.
