Road and Track Guilia QV Breaks Down

http://www.roadandtrack.com/car-cult...giulia-issues/

"Not a single complete lap. I tried several times, but on a mild summer day, the car couldn’t make it through a single lap. It kept breaking."

"When I left the pits, with Race Mode on and stability control off, the car ran normally. By the time I reached the track’s back half, less than a mile later, the Alfa had thrown a check-engine light, reactivated its stability control, and dumped its drive mode back into Normal. "

Other recent experiences at R and T:
"My last Giulia press car—two months ago, in Seattle—idled so unevenly, the cabin rocked. Its transmission didn’t like pulling away from stoplights, either slipping excessively or jerking to speed from a stop. Earlier this year, when our digital director, Travis Okulski, had a test Giulia, the headlight washer cover fell off, the seat-height adjuster came away in his hands, and the radio refused to change stations."

I don't think I've ever seen a car be this unreliable during press reviews. It's unbelievable.

I was going to post this but you beat me to it. Reports continue to come in and it's not near good. The article is lengthy and full of history and nostalgia, but between the blabber, are more facts:

"...Car and Driver, has seen three test Giulias to date. The first one, a Quadrifoglio, forced itself into limited-power efficiency mode whenever you remote-started the car. It wouldn’t leave that mode unless you reset it with a code reader. The next car, another Quadrifoglio, at the magazine’s annual Lightning Lap track test, refused to rev to the end of the tach. It threw trouble codes, lit the check-engine light, and started short-shifting."

"I asked C/D’s technical director, Eric Tingwall, if there was a common thread. “They don’t fail with any kind of consistency, in my experience,” he said. “It’s not like there’s just one component that’s causing this. It’s not just Quads, it’s Quads and 2.0-liters, engines and transmissions.” A few weeks ago, when Tingwall left to test the Alfa Stelvio SUV in Tennessee, he reluctantly packed a code reader in his luggage, assuming it might come in handy. He didn’t need it, but, “Within two miles of finishing the drive, I’m pulling up to the hotel, and the auto-start-stop icon on the dash lit up with a warning light next to it."

"Every new car has teething issues, and press cars are notoriously ridden hard and put away wet. But this kind of behavior is remarkable."

You'd think the ones they send away to the press would be tip top.

Not sure who would be surprised thou. Alfa has never made a reliable car. They have all sucked.

It continues to surprise me how little I can trust these auto journalists that drive cars for a couple hours and have to make a decision on which ones are the "best."

I'm glad at least some of these longer term drives are showing the true issues of the Guilia. Too bad, this car had some great numbers and potential.

Oh good lord lol.

I honestly like the Guilia but this level of breakdowns on every reviewer car seems to be just hilarious.

Are owners reporting the same thing or is it just press cars?

That's why I won't be buying a first-generation car anytime soon, let alone a first gen Alfa Romeo!

I owned several Alfa's in the past and none had issues, believe it or not. But I do recall first gen's always having some surprises up its sleeve.

I drop a joke now and then about Alfa's reliability too, but what we're seeing with the Giulia Q is -even for Alfa standards- pretty uncommon. I can't remember any Alfa of the past 20 years underperforming like this. The least you could expect is Alfa going to the fullest extent of making sure these press cars are rock solid...

Part of the problem is likely the fact that they started practically from scratch on the platform due to not having a suitable platform to base it off of and tried to shoehorn development into a 2-2.5 year window.

Couple this with it being FCA and it's not a recipe for reliability.

Indeed, although it's no ordinary FCA product, looking at the way it was accomplished, which -honestly- let me to believe it could be different this time (and it needed to be when reentering the US market). It will probably take another year (or two) to iron out all the kinks...

Well, clearly, if you get one of these, don't do anything that might in any remote way invalidate the warranty. Definitely don't mod it!
