Cool Spy Video: More 2014 BMW M3 (F80) Look and Listen from Spain

BIMMERPOST NEWS
Spy Video: More 2014 BMW M3 (F80) Live Look and Listen from Spain
108
COMMENTS

The 2014 F80 M3 prototype continues hot climate testing in Spain and we continue getting more live looks and listen at the next generation M3 sedan.

Our new video provides a good listen at the M3 prototype accelerating from a stop, though it's obviously not a full out acceleration run. For full throttle acceleration at speed, see the previously posted M3 and M4 prototype videos from Nurburgring testing, copied below. We also hear the car's startup for the first time. One thing's for sure - there will be no lack of baritone and bass sounds coming from the F80's exhaust. Its hearty burble is heard throughout the clip. As with all prototypes, its sound is certainly subject to more tuning.

The F80's ride and suspension looks planted, with little body roll and suspension travel (check out how stiff the suspension appears when the car leaves the car wash).

To reiterate our oft repeated details on the upcoming F80 M3 / F82 M4:

The F80 M3 / F82 M4 will be powered by an inline 6 cylinder engine with multiple turbochargers, pushing approximately 450 horsepower. The engine has been rumored to be an extensively reworked and reinforced N55 6-cylinder engine with a strengthened aluminium block with a heavily modified cylinder head. The Induction technology is said to be completely new as will be the latest bi-vanos variable valve timing. But, we also think there may be a possibility that the engine turns out to be a reworked/enhanced version of a successor engine to the N55 (which has not yet been introduced). Both a DCT and manual transmission will be available and both have been spotted on the prototypes. The blue brakes resemble the new 3 Series' M Sport brakes, paired with steel cross drilled rotors.

For more M3/M4 coverage see: http://www.bimmerpost.com/m3/f30m3/

The following is a summary what we know regarding the F80 M3 / F82 M4:
  • Lighter than current M3
  • Faster than current M3
  • More powerful than current M3
  • More efficient than current M3
  • Powered by an inline 6 cylinder turbo engine
  • Offered with optional or standard manual transmission
  • Electric Power Steering (completely reworked for precision for M3/M4)
  • M3 Introduced late 2013 - early 2014 (concept debuts earlier)
  • M4 Introduced no earlier than late 2014

I really have to see this car in person. It looks very mature and elegant. The exhaust sound was very 335i-ish

Doubtful. Car looks fantastic but it will never exhilarate like the S65. I can't see myself getting rid of the E92 unless the tunes are flat out stupid fast.

That is one seriously throaty exhaust.

BTW, when he pulls forward from the car wash, the dip in rpms sounds to me like he's driving a car with a manual transmission. Might be of interest to those concerned that the F80 wouldn't offer a manual.

Why would they run the supposed hood vents closed while testing?

Also, anyone else think the design looks a little tame? side and back dont look all that M'ish...I guess that camo does a great job.

The F80 looks so good because the flared fenders complement the already wide look of the base F30. I can't wait for more camo to be removed!

Does anyone else think the exhaust is kind of droney? I wish it was a raspier sound like the S54.

It won't sound like our V8's and we all know that already but I think it will sound pretty good. If not, there is always Eisenmann, Akra, Remus etc. as an option.
Plus, most of us change out the exhaust in our cars anyway, so, it really won't matter too much what the OEM exhaust note sounds like.

Nah, the turn signals are incandescent. BMW pulled this nonsense before when the LCI E46 M3 went from LED tail lamps to non-LED with the pre-LCI E92. Now the LCI E9XM is going from LED tail lamps back to non-LED with the pre-LCI F80. It's a MY14 car that has old tech than a MY04 car. Why does BMW feel the need to continue this trend?

The prototype has been photographed with a manual transmission before. This is nothing new, and the rumor that the F80 won't come with a manual transmission is unfounded.

It doesn't sound like an M car blah blah. Not much you can do with an I6 with turbos. It doesn't need to sound like an "M" car, it needs to drive like one. The 1M coupe is a great example of this. Doesn't need to be NA or have 8 cylinders to be special. I know BMW won't spoil the M3 name, at least I hope

It does sound quite poor. I hope BMW do a better job than the new M5 (which sounds awful) in the remaining months until launch.

+1

That is just BMW marketing making you want to spend more, either on buying the new version or upgrading. It is getting like PC's.
