Time will tell with me, the car looks good - but I still have a HPFP bad taste in my mouth.

Note: Change the M3 front bumper and the cars dont look that far off.

I'm liking everything I've seen so far about the M4, I just hope it isn't a dissapointment like it's big brother M6.

Love or Hate - Wide spectrums for what will be a good/great car

I own a 2011 E90 M3. I bought it for performance, capability, and to use on-track but also as a daily driver.

To my mind, the M3/M4 is the most important vehicle release for BMW in many years, due to the halo-effect of this vehicle on the brand. The M3 has always been the performance benchmark for BMW and that which many other cars are measured against. So, it must be an appreciable performance step-up from the E9X M3...not an easy task.

Honestly, I'm excited. Even if I don't buy the car, it's exciting to see what BMW has done w/technology (CRP, Carbon/Ceramic brakes, light weight, forced induction). I hope it is light, fast, and mean...w/some creature comforts.

I can't stand the new engine being turbo, to the point I won't buy it.

It is completely against the philosophy of M for the past 20-30 years. They have always been NA, high revving engines.

It is frankly pathetic to read reviews and comparisons of the new F1X Ms. Almost everyone talks about the disconnection, etc.
The current M5 would be a very good M7. As an M5, it fails.

I'll just keep the '13 E92 M until BMW builds an exciting car again. If I were in the market for a torque filled experience that sounds like garbage I'd buy a car that is ACTUALLY fast, like a GTR.

///M has sold out completely. Not a single car in their lineup as of now that I'm even slightly interested in. I never thought we'd get there...

For the record, I don't mind the X ///Ms. As long as it brings cash in to build proper cars I'm ok. But for God's sake, build a single proper car!

As long as the CEO is a pansy who says there won't be an Mi8 because it goes against their 'connected drive and efficiency' drive nothing good will come of BMW.

I have a m3 e92 and I like the line of the new one. I'm also very worried about tech specs and more how would be the feeling of the response of the engine to gas pedal ( I really love the way the aspirated engine of the E92 responds to the input of my right foot)

I don't know how people do look forward to a twin turbo inline 6 as M. Time to switch to Porsche.

To my mind the E9X M3 was more special vis-a-vis the stock E9x than the next gen M3/M4 is to the F30/F8x.
Precisely my sentiments.

I think my next car will be an M3. I prefer the looks of the F80 over the F82... and my F10 is a bit too big and "mature" for my taste. I came from an e92 M3....and save for the lack of torque...I miss the car in a bad way.

Thank god I don't change wife's like I do cars......

I agree with you, for about 80.000 Euro between a new M4 and a used Porsche GT3 3.8 I would be vey tempted to buy Porsche

Given the choice I'd happily give up 1K rpm's for boost at lower rpms.

The coming engine is likely to spin to 7,500 rpms with an additional 100 lb ft. of torque at lower rpms all in a package that is a couple hundred pounds less. What exactly is there to complain about?

I have mixed feelings about the whole new F generation of the 3 seri. The M4 is definitely included. The shape doesn't interest me at all, the engine is a turbo in line 6 which really in general I consider a step backwards. The new shots that surfaced for the new M3 made me rethink things a little. I like the F80 M3 although still looks like many of the mod impregnated F30 335 cars I see on the forum. If I ever think of a new car in 3-4 yrs, I'd probably go for the F80 M3 but that also depends on how the car gonna perform in real life after production. That will be an addition to my current M3 not a replacement.

The M4 looks promising, and I remain optimistic. But, if it follows the overweight drudgery of the M5 and M6, there will not be one in my future. Whoever argues otherwise, likely owns one of the two.

I most look forward to specs on the M2. For now, I'll keep my E92 and will try to find a track ready E36.

I have no doubts that the M4 is going to be a fantastic street car. In fact I have no doubt that most current M3 owners will fall in love with it after a test drive. One of the biggest complaints I hear on M3post about the M3 is "lack of torque". I'm willing to bet these people are just expecting power in the lower RPMs and frustrated that its not there. That will be solved in the M4 and most people will be instantly satisfied.

I think the bigger concern at this point is how the car feels at the track. And obviously this is only a concern for a fraction of owners that actually take their M3's to the track. The instant throttle response and smooth power delivery up to the high rpm redline are part of what makes the E9x M3 such a fun car at the track. And as we've seen, each successive generation M3 has gotten faster around the track, but also less engaging and enjoyable. I'm sure this will also be the case with the M4. Faster, but less exciting as well. Longer wheelbase seems to play a part in that.

Pretty lame, I agree. Goes to show what most people know about cars and engines. The day will come when track days become a bunch of geezers sitting around watching how their self-driving car v1.04 beats their friend's v1.03

First, you need to understand the fundamental difference between engines types? This is a *much* larger departure from ///M than anything else they've done on M5s and M3s.
M engines have followed the basic trait of NA, high revving. The traits of good engine builders, just FYI.
No head of an M division has said 'we'll never build a V10'. But they have said, numerous times, that they wouldn't build turbocrap.

I'm going to explain it real simply

engine torque=X
rpms=Y
power=Z
constant=k

So here it is
Z=X*Y*k

So they've told us
Z is the same or almost the same
Y is almost the same, 7500 vs 8400
k is a constant, it's the same

So, this engine cannot exist. The only way for it to happen is if torque is WAY lower at max HP than peak torque. This eliminates the surging, incremental power of a proper engine.

There is a whole lot of ground between love and dislike.

I love the weight reduction.

I dislike that they've gone away from a naturally-aspirated engine.

I love parts of the new exterior design.

I dislike parts of the new exterior design.

I love that it will outperform the E9x in ever measurable way.

I dislike the thought that some connection to the machine will be lost in the process.

I love the interior.

I dislike the tri-color stripe on the roof and the badge in the grille.

I love my M3.

I dislike the thought that I may not love the new one.

I will lament the shift from the N/A exclusive engine manufacturing philosophy of BMW ///M to the new fuel efficient/main stream/one size fits all marketing antics currently being served up by BMW. Since 1994 I have owned 13 new BMW's, 4 being FI (3 N63 and 1 N55). I can safely say from experience that the FI cars are extremely temperamental. Engine Malfunction Reduced Power error codes to lumpy idle characteristics. Those who have spent any significant time with these engines know what I am talking about. It also appears the S63 & S63 tu are no different in this regard. The N55 in my wife's F25 has proven to be reliable, but exhibits the aforementioned idle issues at times. Only time will tell how the S55 fares performance vs. reliability.

As far as the exterior aesthetics of the F80/F82 are concerned I think it's a win. Interior I will have to reserve judgement until released. That being said, I wouldn't mind having an F82 "in addition to" my E92 ///M.

You can label the E9x ///M's as being out dated, relics, old, and whatever other adjective you wish to add. It doesn't change the fact that it is the one and only V8 M3, and comes with a unique, old school, analog (non-artificial/synthesized) sound track with an 8400 red line, instant throttle response, and carries the crown as one of the greatest ever.

Damn I'm in love all over again

Hell Yeah!

That guy really seems to be jealous of the E9X M3!
