BMW M4 and M3 Street Sounds and Our Rebuttal of the No Manual Transmission Rumor
220
COMMENTS

You've heard recent M4/M3 prototypes blasting around the Nurburgring [M4 vid] [M3 vid], now have a listen at how they sound around town.

MANUAL TRANSMISSION OR NOT?

As for today's rumor out of Autoblog that there will be no manual transmission option for the M4, we believe it to be false. We submit contrary evidence in the form of: photos, videos, and VIN (options) information. The photos clearly show an early F80 M3 prototype with a 6 speed manual, the videos show what appears to be manual prototype M3 and M4 (judging by the shift and RPM patterns), and the VIN information shows prototypes with and without a DCT option.

F80 M3 prototype photos showing 6 speed manual transmission (from this thread).

M3 and M4 Prototypes Displaying Manual Transmission Behavior

STATEMENT FROM BMW M HEAD OF ENGINEERING

Also, as recently as a year ago, BMW M's head of engineering Albert Biermann made this statement:

"The M3 needs to have a stick shift. It will always have a stick shift." [full statement]

While I think the M3 may one day (in future generations) lose stick shift, if Biermann is making this statement with the F80 M3 / F82 M4 development already well underway (by the time of the statement), I'd think that's a pretty solid statement we can bank on... in addition to all the other evidence.

M3 / M4 VIN INFORMATION

The following are the prototype VIN information that we've previously posted. As you can see, the first listed M3 prototype clearly indicates a "2MK M DCT WITH DRIVELOGIC" option (marked in red), while the second prototype's VIN information does not.

M3 and M4 will be available with M DCT and Manual.

I wonder if these are the same clowns who said that a V8 or larger engine can be fitted into the i8? It can't.

The white M4 in the first video clearly has a manual transmission. Rumor is dead in the water.

Still sounds pretty terrible though lol

Would be a sad day in bmw history if they did away with a MT... That's not gonna happen. Who cares if DCT is a fraction of a second faster. Very few buyers will be using them for racing purposes anyway, can't beat the feel of a good old clutch.

It sure as hell can be configured to fit larger than the likes of the 3 cylinder. Regardless it truly needs a trip to ///M

This isn't just a rumor...

The M5 is not availble in Europe as a mt...

Probebly this will be the case aswel with the M3/M4... Maybe they will make mt's for the us market but i doubt that there will ba a mt in Europe...

Manual is the number 1 option for me, I will not buy a "sports car" w/o manual.

For me personally it is make or break on any purchase. I would take a 128 manual over a M3 auto, again that is me, not everyone will agree.

If the manuals do go away forever, I would only buy used, just get a Prius, or some type of SUV/pickup, but no more new "sports cars".....

My wife would love it !!!

The majority of this site is US members so we're still glad to hear that there will be MT option. Shame you guys don't get MT for M5/M6 in Europe

I really really tried to like the ZF8 in my f30 335i. No go. Needs more manual.

Really relieved to hear that my next car will have a manual option.

(Cars in video sound terrible. I'm sure this will not be the case with the production version, although they do seem to have much more raspy-ness and a lot less throaty-ness than past M's.)

While this will be both my first turbo and DCT car, I am confident that it will be offered with a 3 pedal setup.

Keep fighting the good fight, man. What you're proposing would set a dangerous precedent for the rest of us. Remember...The automatic is a gateway transmission.

Contrary to the M5, I do think that MT will be available for the M3/M4 in Europe as well. If you look at the VIN information in the first post, all cars are for Germany, and they likely wouldn't have to test German spec MT cars if it was available in the US only.

Best regards,
south
