Wheel & Tire Size Help

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
I am purchasing some Forgeline GA1Rs for my track wheels. In reading all threads I could see concerning wheel and tire options from you folks I am thinking 19x10s up front and 19x11s out back. That should let me run 285/30 up front and 305/30 with MSC2s all around.

I have ordered the GC camber plates so I can start with about -2.5 up front. I almost only run COTA because I live in Austin and that track needs negative camber big time.

So - I need your expertise while ignoring my tire choice please as I like to drive to the track, drive it, drive home. Will the fronts rub? How much offset, etc.?

THANK YOU

As a tidbit, I am presently running 10"/11" wide front/rear track wheels on my base M4. If I were to do it again, I would have gotten 10.5" wide wheels in front for better tire shoulder support.

Michelin does list the 285 as the max wheel width for that tire. What offset of the wheel for no rubbing?

I have APEX 19x10 ET25 on the front of my GTS with 285/30 PSCup2s, GC plates at ~2.5 and I have no rub whatsoever.

I use a 18X10ET25 in front with no rubbing. The wheel width will not affect rubbing much unless one rubs on the tire sidewall, which is not often the case. IIRC, the GTS has a wider front track due to the unique hub carriers, which should leave a little more inner clearance vs a regular M4. While a 285 is acceptable for a 10" wide, a 10.5" wide wheel would offer better sidewall support. I find my 275 NT01 roll over a bit too much on my 10" wide wheels and I wear my inner and outer shoulders much faster than the tread center despite running 45psi hot pressures. I figure a 10.5" would help alleviate that, hence my comment.

LAST QUESTION - should I go 19" diameter at all four corners or 20" diameter? I know 19" is better for the track for unsprung weight savings/performance BUT I read a lot about the wheels and calipers getting damaged by the tight fight, hence the consideration of 20"

THANKS

19s are only a concern up front due to clearance issues. Scored one of my front wheels with a stuck rock the day I got the car I think... 19s in back won't cause any issue. Plenty of clearance.

My track feedback: I wouldn't choose to make any changes to front or rear wheel size. Other than the negative camber problem up front, it's a gem.

One fellow runs 19” F and 18” R on his GTS if I recall.

I’d not ever consider 20” for the track if you can run 19” F & R (or 19/18).

I’ve damaged all my 19” F rims, stock or otherwise. The APEX 19” F have more caliper clearance, but all it takes is one large rock ...

Thank you for the feedback - I like 19"s just because it opens up more tire choices for track duty although I will likely run the MSC2s and I will probably try the Goodyear Supercar3Rs - they are really sticky. As for my track only wheels, they will be Forgeline GA1R Open Lug in Transparent Smoke. For all other duty than track, I will run the STOCK wheels.
