what do I need to upgrade id4 --> id6
I will be getting a 2016 M3 this Thursday and my biggest concern is how can I upgrade the idrive from idrive 4 to 6
I believe the 2016 is idrive 4.2. please link specific hardware. I've been searching and can't find a thread for detailed explanation of upgrading.

I actually looked into this back along and the cost looked "significant" (like $3000-4000). It looked difficult enough that I thought I'd just upgrade the whole car to a newer model in the future rather than retrofit something so integral. From what I could read the install was non-trivial; it required a newer NBT unit, optional newer screen, change of iDrive controller, wiring, trim and coding to make it work as if it was supposed to be there. It also ruined any chance of using the subscription services BMW offers (if you wanted those). Some info here: https://www.bimmer-tech.net/blog/ite...cic-nbt-nbtevo And these guys did it in SG: |

Will require a new head unit with upgraded RAM capacity and additional programming/coding to match your VIN. Aside from this, all other hardware is compatible starting with 2016 models (iDrive controller will work but the labeling on the buttons will no longer match as the layout was changed in newer models - depends on how picky you are). Completely plug-n-play. |

I hear ID6 is horribly slow/unstable on ID4 hardware. Keep us posted.

I hate when nobody responds with the needed info...so here is what i know.
I think the best bet would be to contact BimmerTech and provide your VIN. You will need to send in the NBT EVO 2 HU to Bimmertech to flash the HU if you source the hardware from ebay/elsewhere. You will get the latest Maps, ID6 software, and full screen carplay. Cost = $2400 give or take for all hardware and coding. NBT EVO 2 ID6 Retrofit Needed Items: - NBT EVO 2 Head Unit - HD 8.8 Screen Apix 2 - iDrive Touch controller - ATM module - Videos Cables - Plug and Play Harness With Module - WIFI Antenna -Jumpers -Flashing of the NBT EVO -Final Coding after install of the headunit Do keep in mind that with the NBT EVO 2 HU Retrofit you would no longer have access to BMW Assist, Remote, Sirius XM (BMW activation), and BMW Connected (which are usually subscription based features).

I have a US matched pair NBT Evo ID6 + ATM in my E90. It is 100% possible but none of the vendors offer US parts. Finding US parts at a good price is very difficult. The European units are about $600 euros for the HU, screen and controller which is about 1/2 the cost of a US set.

Pre-coded or not?
Related to the upgrade from ID 4 to ID 6, could somebody be kind enough and explain to me the difference between coding the new HU (with ID 6 software) in advance or after the installation (possibly remotely)?
This seems to be the primary thing separating the solutions offered by CodeMyBimmer and Bimmer-tech, for instance (thank you to both parties for being extremely helpful on this forum). Is there any other difference dependent on when the coding is being done that one should be aware of? I have a 6/2016 build F82 that only requires a new HU (coded to one's VIN and options) and a WiFi antenna to perform the upgrade and if I've understood correctly, all the Connected Drive and Remote functionalities will be retained as well as long as the donor vehicle is from the same market. (Please correct me if I am wrong?). Combined to the coding (in advance or after), the upgrade seems to be a complete plug n' play. Is there anything that needs to be done on the side of the Connected Drive service btw? My apologies if I am asking stupid questions. Cheers! |

I thought the only real hw difference is that the ID 5/6 headunit has more ram ?
Has anyone looked into just upgrading the ram and then updating it with the ID 6 software to see if it's stable ? |

Everything works as advertised except one thing. The profile memories do not retain the M1 MDrive settings. It does work for the M2 button. So I programmed a radio button to take me to the M1 settings for when I need two MDrive buttons. Bimmertech's suggestion was to reinstall the old HU-NBT and take the car to a dealer. First of all, this wasn't happening with the HU-NBT and second, the install is not something you just redo the next day. After all my research and coding attempts, I think there is some incompatibility between the HU-EVO communications to some of the other modules that causes this. Or Bimmertech sold me a defective HU-EVO. Regardless, I am happy with the ID6 functions and having the same iDrive as the 2018 X3 M40i also in my garage. |

kubax86 perhaps you might know the answer to my question above in post #16? What is the difference between coding a HU before or after installation with regards to a retrofit? (Could have sent a PM but I think others might be interested in the answer too.) Hope I'm not troubling!
