No spare? Despair !

So I'm assuming there wont be a spare wheel in the trunk, to save on weight.

What do people do when they drive into the middle of nowhere (rural virginia in my case)? I have done this before with the RS4 and always bring a spare rim/tire in the trunk.. Even tho it has never happened, the last thing that I want to do is bust a tire in the middle of rural Virginia, and be absolutely screwed because no one stocks that tire size. Not even the local Audi dealers.. They also informed me it would be like a 2 day delivery if I needed one.

So just curious what others opinions are on this issue and the M3/4 ? The easy solution is just to not drive it to such places

Fix a flat won't fix a pothole tire (esp sidewall) rupture, which is what I am more concerned about. Any clown in a repair shop can fix a nail hole

No, I understand that, but the chances of it happening are quite low. I lived without a spare tire for 8 years on my last car (I figured stero amps were more important than the spare, and that's where they went) and it had big fat 275/35/19s on the rear and 245/35/19s on the front. Never had an issue.

Sure, without a spare, you are taking a risk, but it's pretty small risk.

Ok.. awesome.. thx for the confidence boost. I have prob been over-reacting But I have blown one once in my Lexus IS300 (a long time ago) on a pothole and was thankful it carried a spare. But you are right, prob will never happen again.

Same thing with previous Ms. I remember for e46 M3, people bought the Z4 skinny donut spare tire to keep in the M3 trunk. We should be able to find a compatible one for the new Ms.

Spare for M3/M4

My guess is Bimmerzone will have a spare sometime after cars begin to be delivered in the US.

I have found that an emergency miniskirt works wonders too. I for one will always stop and help you if needed if you guys are wearing one.

I swear, never fails for me, just try it! and one weighs less than a hundred grams, so it's not likely it would mess with the weight distribution even if you place it in the trunk.

Afraid I don't have the legs to persuade anyone to stop if I was wearing a mini/micro skirt.

Don't worry Tisme, I would stop, and well, the rest of the folks would stop to take photos, so they would too give you a hand. I was just giving you a weight saving option, that works.

You really should try my solution! I bet we even would receive photos of that one! (I always picture you 205cm tall and a body builder type kind of guy, with a noncali tan and a sailors hat. Sorry, I really have too much time on my hands, but this soon will be corrected).

Compact spare solution

I'm selling my current E92 space saver spare I put together with my car so will need to put together another one. I know the lug bolts have increased to 14mm, but what is the hub diameter (E92 was 72.6mm)?

For reference, here is the E92 thread I started on building up a spare which should be a good starting point. The one I did was slightly smaller in diameter than stock; there are other options now: http://www.m3post.com/forums/showthr...ce+saver+spare

This is what I do as well, I also keep a small compressor to be able to fill.

The M3/4 comes with a compressor in the form of the MMobility kit.

Compact spare tire/wheel setup

Okay, I'm revisiting this subject since I did it originally for the E9X.

Stock tire diameters are 26.0"F & 26.6"R. Ideal spare would be in this range. Two options are T145/70R-18 (26.0") & T155/70R-18 (26.5"). The 145 is 0.4" narrower, thus taking up less room in the trunk. Maxxis has the best size selection and most reasonable prices: http://www.maxxis.com/catalog/tire-4...-compact-spare. The 145 & 155 are both $149 though their site, but you may find a local dealer (dealer locator on the website). The X5 steel wheel worked fine on my E92, and should be fine here. The center bore is different so you need a reducing ring.

As I see it, here's what is needed:

- BMW 36 11 6 768 861 - 18" black steel wheel (X5 fitment) - $68.06 through Newegg (from bmwpartssource.com) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...9SIA1060PF3747
- BMW 36 12 1 116 326 black rubber valve stem - $2.52 through Newegg http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...9SIA1060PF5057
- Centering (hubcentric) plastic ring 74 - 72.56mm - Various plastic ones available through Amazon.com for as little as $6.00/set 4. You glue this in; can sell spares to other forum members.
- T145/70R-18 or 155/70R-18 tire. $149 through Maxxis http://shop.maxxis.com/c/compact-spa...irected_post=1, or through you local dealer.

I will order the wheel today and verify for sure next week there are no clearance issues. PS, you will also need to carry a jack and lug wrench. You can source a small scissor jack from many sources, including BMW, and carry it under the wheel or in you underfloor well. Note that BMW also has a light alloy spare wheel - #36 11 678 8 203 that is around $175, and the width is only 3.5" vs. 4" for steel.

Compact spare tire update

I assembled the spare per the previous post, and it fits fine (with steel brakes). I got the Maxxis 145/70 tire, which is the same diameter (26.0") as the OEM front. Stock lug bolts work fine, as well. Weight is 37.6 lb. Total cost, including shipping:

Wheel & valve stem - $84.08
Hubcentric rings (4) - $11.58
Tire - $164.00
Mounting - free w/ tire purchase though local dealer

Total - $259.66
