BootMod3 Flash

Here's where things begin to take a turn. I purchased the BM3 license and reached out to a tuner. We flashed on a base map, did a few data logs and squeezed in a revision right before I packed the car up for a second trip to Buttonwillow. All was good, no issues however that changed shortly once arriving to the track.

Second Buttonwillow Track Day

We set out for the second track day with the M4. About an hour into the drive I caught a nail in the driver front tire resulting in a flat in the middle of the grapevine on the 5 fwy. For those who aren't familiar with with socal, the grapevine is a section of the highway that passes through about 45 miles of mountains connecting two cities with very few exits in between. I called AAA for a flatbed and patiently waited. About 45 minutes pass and I see a flat bed.. Thank god.. Only to SEE HIM DRIVE RIGHT PAST THE CAR. Awesome. There's really no way for the truck to turn around so let's call AAA again. Another 30-40 minutes pass and I decide to follow up, they give me several 10-20 minute intervals with updates that seem to be pushing later and later only to find out the tow truck en route has broken down.. Beautiful. Call AAA a third time, they dispatch another tow truck out. About an hour later on the side of the road, I see a flatbed. Thank god.. I flag him down and thankfully he pulls over. He immediately tells me that he is not the assigned truck to this car and was actually headed up north (the direction of the race track) to pick up another car. After a few minutes of reasoning with the gentleman, he decides to pick the car up and we call AAA to assign his truck to the M4. The next hurdle was getting the car on the truck undamaged. With a little bit of freeway-side engineering, we were able to get the car loaded with the bumper and splitter unscathed. The driver was kind enough to tow the car all the way to the racetrack where I found two 275/35R18 Toyo RR's to replace the front tires and we would be able to get the car on track around 1:30pm.

The car arrived safely to the track and I immediately began the tire swap process. Thankfully the track's tire shop had the tires readily available in stock which was a day saver. However the first session out with the flash, the car immediately goes into drivetrain malfunction. All boost is cut, and the car is limited to 4000rpm, just enough to limp it off the track. Fearing the tune was too aggressive, I swapped the map back to stock and the car was able to drive and produce boost. The car ran, however a noticeable amount of power was being pulled and the car was running about 10mph slower down the front straight. Fastest lap time I could muster was a 1:54, almost 2 seconds slower than the initial baseline day. I decided to save the car, drive it home, and bring it back another day. Big big thank you to Mike from Counterspace Garage for coming out and helping out! Arrived to the track on a tow truck, and drove the car home. Ironic right?

Very familiar with the Grapevine. Worst spot too, too many truckers commuting through there.

Keep us posted on the power issue. Think maybe a boost leak?

By the way, this is a fantastic thread.

I'm sure you can agree that was a terrible place to be stuck for 3hrs haha. The thread is still being updated to be up to date, but it wasn't a boost leak. The tune itself may just be too aggressive. I am bringing the car to Streets of Willow on Sunday to dedicate a day to datalogging and revisions. Hopefully this solves the tune issues once and for all. And thank you.

Glad everything turned out ok with the motor. Moreover, still quick at 1:54
I can actually sympathize. I blew a rod bearing 7 or 8 yrs ago at CVR. 2nd to the last session of the day, so around 3:30 PM. AAA did not show up to pick me up until 9 PM. MF's! I'm still angry. What's even worst, I didn't bring a jacket. It was so cold my teeth were chattering while waiting with the windows up inside the car. I didn't get home "3 hrs away" untill midnight.

That's terrible, I can only imagine that. Chuckwalla is by far the worst place to have a break down at. I've blown a motor as well at Chuckwalla, but thankfully my towing situation turned out a bit smoother than yours. F*ck getting home at midnight after a day like that.. By the way I am pretty sure we met when you had your E9X, back then I time attacked my red S2000 during VTEC Club and Redline Time Attack days!

Bimmer Challenge Round 1 Prep & SSR Performance Downpipes

Once again back at HQ. We had one week until the first round of Bimmer Challenge at Chuckwalla Valley Raceway. The tires we had initially intended to run in B2 class (Nankang AR-1s) got bumped up 0.5 pts putting the car in B1 aka unlimited. My friend, Arya, was kind enough to donate two pairs of front Pirelli DH take offs from his Porsche GT4 Clubsport in 265/645-18. With the bump in class I decided, hell, we're going to need to revise this tune again, why not add a downpipe to add a bit more power to hopefully put us in contention to be competitive. So on went the SSR Performance downpipes. Once again, Shah's customer service was great, so was the quality and fitment. Zero complaints here and I would highly recommend their product.

Bimmer Challenge Round 1 Prep Cont.

Downpipes are installed and we are ready for more data logging and revising of the tune. I decided to replace the spark plugs with NGK SILZKBR8D8S (97506) and change the oil with Ravenol 0w40 thanks to Motorsport Fluids.

(15.5k miles on the original plugs)

BM3 Flash Cont.

This time, we datalogged (granted street logs) for about 3 days straight. Tuner requested traction off 3rd gear 2500rpm WOT to 6500rpm, click 4th, repeat, and click 5th. 3rd gear was almost unusable, immediate wheel spin all the way to 4th. It was a game of keeping the car straight and not eating a curb. 4th would spin a bit, but begin to hook mid RPM range. We smoothened that out and the car felt great. Power was great, traction was manageable. I thought for sure we were golden this time.

Loading up for Bimmer Challenge Round 2

Alright, SSR downpipes installed, basic maintenance done, Pirelli DH slick take offs were installed, and we had quite a bit of data logging and revisions done for the tune. We should be set. I wasn't taking any chances this time so trailering the car up it is!

Oh.. and decided to add Aerocatch hood latches as well, and eliminated the factory latch mechanism and hinges. While we were at it, I picked up a set of APR carbon canards (for the hell of it) and slapped those on the car as well. With the recent unfortunate events happening, I decided to add a subtle homage tribute to Kobe on the car..

This past Sunday marked round 1 of Bimmer Challenge's 2020 season. The car was entered in B1 and we were optimistic the tune would be sorted out so that the car could run right. Unfortunately the first session out, drivetrain malfunction returned a few corners into the first hot lap. Again cutting all boost and limited to 4000rpm, I limped the car back into the pits frustrated a second time. Tj from Trinity Autosport was kind enough to scoot over to my trailer with his scanner. 110001 Cylinder Injection cutout: Pressure too low in high-pressure fuel system.

We cleared the codes and I took the car for a quick spin around the pits. The car was able to boost once again. Awesome, just in time for the second session which counts towards the Bimmer Challenge competition. The car was gridded and I had set out to try and set a lap time. This time, although no drivetrain malfunction, the car would pull power once again. This time the power was pulled progressively, and eventually after a few laps, would give a power cut towards the end of straight aways. The issue is without a doubt frustrating, but at least the car ran, and I was able to tie together a 1:59.0 lap in the final lap of session two. (Previous best time there was 2:00.0 in my NA S2000).

Frustrated but happy the car still ran, I gridded for the final session that counted for Bimmer Challenge. Set the Pirelli DH to 24psi all around cold (aiming for 30psi hot), and gridded the car one last time. Hopefully I can drive around the imperfections in the tune and tie together one lap. Winning the event was out of the question, so the goal was to crack a 1:58 lap further beating my previous personal best at the track. Unfortunately my go pro died this final session.. After about 5 laps (two hot laps followed by cool down laps).

Was able to drop the lap time with a....1:58.398! Placed me in 5th in Bimmer Challenge's unlimited class but I am happy to go home with my fastest time to date. It was time to load up the trailer and head back on the Jesus journey home. At this point I am extremely frustrated with the tune situation. Unfortunately I forgot my lap top and OBD2 cable at home, so I wasn't able to datalog anything at the track at all. However this issue is placed at the top of the list to sort out before Round 2 of Bimmer Challenge at Buttonwillow on February 29.

Back at HQ

With about two weeks remaining until the next round of Bimmer Challenge, it is time to figure out a solution as soon as possible in regards to the tune. I registered for a last minute track day with JMP Autowerkz at Streets of Willow CCW this Sunday. Dedicating the entire day to data logging and tune revisions under track conditions, so hopefully this will be the answer to all of our problems, otherwise we will need to begin exploring new tuning options. Next on the list will be adding SPL arms, as the car most definitely needs more front camber, but for now, I will continue to pull out as much unnecessary weight in the interior as possible. Business in the front, party in the back. Enjoy:

Great build, so frustrating with the tune, but I'm sure it will get all sorted out! I definitely feel your pain with unforeseen mishaps. Blew my oil cooler and and bunch of other stuff on the way back from Willow a year ago and ended the day with a late night drive home in a tow truck with my incapacitated F80 on the bed. Looking forward to seeing your M4 out on the track one of these days!

Looking forward to seeing your M4 out on the track one of these days!
I'll be at Streets of Willow tomorrow and Buttonwillow on the 29th, if your schedule is free you should come out!

Back to stock engine

The tune just wasn't working out under track conditions. I am sure many others have successfully tuned their F8X for track use, however I made the decision to revert back to stock downpipes and flash the car back to stock. The downpipes never posed as an issue, but removal was necessary to flash back to the stock tune. Car was loaded and we were ready for another test day at Streets of Willow CCW configuration hosted by JMP Autowerkz.
