Totally agreed, M4 sounds stupid.

The styling looks good and the weight reduction is welcome but i am losing interest in this car. Offering the same hp is ridiculous, myself and the majority (this board is a small and avid % of drivers) of M3 buyers don't spend 80grand to have to invalidate a warranty through aftermarket tuners to make the car move like it should.

The M3 is about more than just hp, but this still seems like a curious decision at this price point. An newer M3 down 140hp from an M5- can't remember that before. (american E36 doesn't count)

A fresh 2013 nat asp E92 is looking like an increasing possibility for me. It never feels down on torque due to flat band and gearing, plus impeccable reliability, heat management on track, no lag and great sound

Jason- any word on whether this engine will have a unique displacement like being bored to 3.2? Basically, something that justifies the cost compared to the E46 and E92.

In return I also agree. I don't think I'll be changing up M cars until I can get into a new M5/M6, or maybe even just spend that $$ on an engine swap for my E92. The M4 just doesn't appeal.

Also, if this is true about the same power then I'd sooner grab a 2013 last of the NAs.

Styling looks good and weight reduction is welcome but this torque won't make me fork over another 80k considering the E92s gearing never makes this car feel low in that area.

For guys who aftermarket tune their cars the turbos are a good thing, but for me they should have resulted in stock power of at least 450.

Disappointed with 450hp? Unless your car weighs over 4,500 lbs, 450hp is plenty of power, especially in the US.

If they drop 2-300 pounds, add a full helping of torque, the car will compete in it's natural environment (which is not the drag strip).

I just fear it will cost well into the $80k's (without carbon brakes).

So for the amount of money i would have to spend to trade in my E90 to get the F30, I should just supercharge mine and i would end up with a much more interesting car, right?

Really digging the weight reduction. Only time will tell how this plays out, but will definitely be watching

A big bump in torque without a bump in horsepower sort of makes sense in the context of turbo motors. Will this I6 be as conservatively rated as other BMW petrol turbo motors? If so, we are right back around the original 450 hp number.

Are we in the era of BMW wink and nod horsepower ratings?

I hope the new M3 can reach 550hp/550tq after a tune.

trust me, it's damn hard to overcome the S65 NA V8...
Not only it being advertised "the last NA BMW M made", this is probably the best engine BMW has ever produced...both in production stand point and racing field/world

Agreed, but how are they going to cut 200 lbs from the standard F30???
While having a LSD, beefier suspension and more standard equipment.
??

I'm wondering if BMW will ever have the car phone home as soon as it senses extra power is made vs. just saving it as a hidden code??

A number of the M5 people were at the M-Studio in early Sep and were able to stand next to the M3&4. It was definitely flared out... Looked great. I wish they would provide the alcantara seats that we saw in the car to the USA, but I guess that's unlikely as usual.

The power dome in the hood looked pretty much the same as the dome on the current E9x M3s to me.

While I welcome the styling changes, weight reduction and increased tourque, I am dissapointed with the HP estimates. And of course this will come with a significantly lower redline and some form of turbo lag. I am sure the car will be great but its going to feel very different than past ///M cars. I am not sure how I feel about that just yet.

Completely agree! Very interested to see what people actually do with them, and companies like vorstiener will make for it body wise.

By the way, whereabouts in Ontario are you from?

I hate torque. Torque is boring... the real race car feel is gone.

None of this matters if it will drive and handle and especially "feel" better than previous M3s and among them my favourite one, the E46, especially original CSL version. That will be a success whatever the hp/tq is from the factory.

However, if it struggles to match the feel of E46 and if it make drivers feel like it is even bigger than the E9X M3s then people will rightfully complain about the stock power level, since even my (and every other) totally stock 1M already provides from its N54T almost 412 lb-ft (560 nm) of torque while getting around 360 ps power (all crank like the numbers stated for next M3). Nothing special, all stock 1Ms or tuned 135i/335i are like that. Now, the 1M weighs 1495 kg. in base-stripped form. I doubt that a F30 based M3 can go much lower than that since it is much bigger in dimension. E46 M3s (standard or CSL) on the other hand were much lighter than the 1M. The new M135i is significantly lighter than the 1M albeit that is a 3 door hatch, so maybe there is still hope.

I say, let's wait and see, what will be the magic trick of the next M3. BMW can't afford dropping that ball imo. So, I say there will be something special about it compared to previous M cars and I hope it is not just wishfull thinking.

There's a lot of cooling components, suspension, limited slip differential, carbon fiber roof, seats with bigger bolsters, and a lot more stuff that you would need to make a 335 match an m3.

Unless of course you want a go fast machine to beat soccer moms with from stop lights...
