DCT not going into Reverse. Any thoughts?

Hope someone can provide some insight into an issue I'm having. I have a 2018 M3 DCT ZCP. Next week I'm taking it in for the 1200 BIS. Recently on two separate occasions I started my car up (cold, first start of the day) in my garage after sitting overnight and attempted to back my car out of the garage. I placed my foot on the brake, moved the shift nob to R and tapped the gas pedal...the engine just rev'd like being in neutral. The R was displayed in the dash (I always check) and on the shift knob. I then placed my foot back on the brake and tried it again, no luck. On the third attempt, the car went into reverse and I was able to back up. I called my SA at the dealer and he thinks I could have tried going into reverse too quickly, hence the computer didn't know the car was in reverse. Any thoughts on what might be happening or what the issue might be? I can validate the dashboard displayed R as my wife witnessed the incident. I'm concerned as this has now happened twice in about three weeks. I also doubt I placed the car in reverse "too quickly" as using the DCT is still new to me and I've been somewhat paranoid about making sure I'm in reverse while still in my garage. Needless to say I do plan on having the dealer look at when I take the car in for it's BIS.

Anyone else out there experience this?

Have to say that I have thrown a shift into reverse a couple of times early on in ownership and had the exact same issue. Even had a 'drivetrain malfunction' pop up on one occasion which momentarily ticked me off no end. On every occasion (4 max in first 2 years) I either took a breath or shut down engine and on restart with a more passive gear change have never seen the issue again.

Of course had the drivetrain warning checked out but 100% AOK - have to assume a sw glitch. So definitely follow-up and record your observations with the dealership but strongly suspect this is not an issue to worry about (which of course is easy for me to say now in hindsight!!).

Cheers, C.

My car does this as well if I engage reverse within a few seconds of starting the car, if I wait say 20-30 secs or so it has always worked.
It must take a few seconds for the various systems to fully boot up and sync to be ready for action.

I certainly hope you are correct! I'm pretty sure I waited about 15 seconds the last time I placed it in reverse. The engine seems to start out with a higher idle when it's cold, so I typically wait about 15-20 seconds before moving it into reverse to let the idle adjust down.

Did you try getting an update for your transmission software at the dealer?

That’s true it is like a manual tranny, but the op reverse is not engaging at all.

20-30sec to engage reverse is not acceptable... I'd say at most 5s is ok, my garage is heated to 10C, which is a bit cold, and I am able to always engage R in few secs. To the OP, if it is that large of a delay, take it in and insist to have them look at the DCT.

I was always under the impression that any vehicle, regardless of transmission, should wait until the revs are under 1,000 before moving the car. This takes 10-30 seconds anyway. Regardless I've never had this problem, but then again, I've always waited until the idle was below 1K. Any time that I had something similar, it has been user error.

I assume your door was closed all the way? This is often a common way that my car won't move despite my efforts!

So as to not annoy my neighbors with the cold start, I back out of the garage as soon as possible after starting the engine. I would say I average less than five seconds of run time before going for reverse, and I've never had an issue. My garage temps are about 45 F most mornings lately, which is about 20-25 above the outside temps.

Definitely have it looked at during your next service visit.

Try doing a full relearn through ISTA. If you have a piggyback that could be the reason also. If a relearn does not do it and you don’t have a piggyback, you probably have an issue elsewhere and may seem completely irrelevant. Run ISTA to make sure.

No need to wait, start the car and drive off.

OP I have to reverse every morning as my first manoeuvre and it always selects reverse, what it doesn't do is always engage hill start assist once I've finished my reverse J turn which is fun as I roll back down the yard....

Funny, I enjoy annoying my neighbors as much as possible with flaps open cold starts

So, finally had my 1200 mile BIS. I don't want to jinx myself, but so far, everything is working normally. I had the dealer check for error codes and made sure the ECU had the most current software. Everything was fine. So if I have any issues down the road, at least it's been documented early on in the car's life. Thanks for all of the feedback.

My neighbors live above me, and they literally hold the high ground when it comes to running through the building or wearing high heels.

I wait the 20-30 secs because I wait for the cars idle to stabilize before putting it into gear and driving off.
