Pro tip - f80 m3 vs. 997 turbo

All:

I've pretty much exited the forum but occasionally look back. I wanted to share something.

I owned a 2015 m3 from august 2014 through ~April 2020. 72k miles or so. Sold it for $32k

I sold it and bought a 997 turbo in May 2020. Bought the 997 turbo for $79k.

I sold the 997 turbo in January 2020 for $79.5k. I've never actually missed it, despite being an amazing and beautiful car.

Ya know what I miss? My manual f80 m3.

Never forget that sometimes what you have is where the grass is greener. Sometimes the ~$30k car (after depreciation) is better for YOU than the ~$80k car.

That's my pro-tip

I'm building a house so probably a year before i get back into a sports car. Not sure what's next. Really prefer manual transmissions, but they are becoming a rare breed. Probably going down market from the 911 turbo though....I think I may enjoy everyday cars much more than the exotics.

You sold the Porsche before you bought it? J/K, sure you meant January 2021.

Good advice! I’d still have my Z4M Roadster but it was just getting old and expensive to maintain (with values only going down too felt like a bad waste of money). I’ve loved my M4s of course, but Z4M is still tops for me.

So did you sell the Porsche to use the proceeds to build the house or sold the Porsche because you didn't really fall in love it with?

The way you progressed to the turbo was my ultimate goal, so your opinion would be awesome. I read your other posts on the turbo, but, I too, love the way my manual F80 is right now, but could consider selling it for the right price. haha

Hi Joe

I'm sorry to hear the Turbo experience did not work out for you. The 6MT vs automatic is a big deal for sure!

Hopefully you're back in a F8X 6MT one day!

was your 997 turbo a manual ?

i'd probably take a manual f80 over an auto/pdk 997 turbo too. but transmissions being equal i'd take the porsche. M3 is a better all rounder though i think... and 997 interiors are pretty bad by modern standards.

Mine was a manual and in outstanding condition. I don't agree on the interior....mine was a ~$137k car in 2008 and the interior reflected that, whereas my m3's interior was....spartan but very nice. And far more functional.

Although I am sure you like the 997 turbo, were you too precious with it, thus having it lessen the joy of driving it? I would think that would be the only real reason why you could've gotten rid of it as well as I'm thinking I'd be the same.

Sure thing! I actually had two Z4M Roadsters over the years, both Imola Red with black interior. Of course, I tinkered with them a lot like all my cars hehe. I miss it, should have kept the last one but it was really getting expensive to maintain.

Thanks, yeah I can’t recommend the car enough most fun I’ve ever had. When I sold, it was over ten years old and wear items were starting to really add up. As well, the Vanos and rod bearings are ticking bombs on the S54. Some folks get lucky and go 125k miles with no issues, others blow up at 25k miles. Neither issue gives you much in the way of warning, you won’t know until the damage is done. Vanos bulletproofing is expensive at over $3k, similar to rod bearings, and it needs a valve adjustment every 35k miles or so. If the motor goes, you could be looking at $20k+. Another option would be to install a used motor, but then you still have the same ticking bomb issues. If the motor goes, I either trash the car or dump $20k into a ten year old car that has 85k miles on it and is maybe worth less than $20k. It just made no financial sense to me.

No doubt many owners will disagree with my thoughts on the car in regards to pitfalls, but for me it just made no sense to be dumping lots of money into a ten year old car. The reliability and beauty of the M4 made the switch a no brainer to me, but car to car I’d still take the Z4M if I knew without a doubt it wouldn’t fail mechanically.

I just got tired of worrying about Vanos and rod bearings every time I drove the car. Perhaps it was irrational, but I couldn’t shake the worry. I have zero worries when I drive the M4, it just *feels* built like a tank where the Z4M did not. Peace of mind goes a long way with me here.

Nice Z4!

The Z4m coupe is probably the greatest design from the Bangle era. Those cars still look ahead of their time even today. They actually had true design characteristics unlike what Dukec is doing.

Nice, thanks for sharing. I have been on the hunt for a Z3 M roadster, but man those having gotten really expensive. So I was thinking maybe a wide body Z4 M, but haven't read up on it. So thanks for the heads up on the engine problems.

No problem, I had three Z3Ms as well. Two S52 Roadsters and one S54 M Coupe.

Those also have their problems, the rear subframe being the big one. As well, if interested in an 01-02 Z3M, verify the rod bearings have been changed. They’re all grenades if not, I destroyed the block in my 01 with less than 20k miles on it (luckily covered under warranty). The Z4M is a far superior machine, the only aspect of the Z3M I preferred was the neat two tone interior scheme many of the cars came with. Otherwise, it’s a car with an E30 front end and an E36 rear. The subframe will separate itself from the car unless it’s been beefed up.
