M2cs vs M3cs VS M4cs Longevity

I haven't seen much discussion on this topic but I wanted to hear some thoughts.

Seeing the recent uptick in desire for the E30 M3. Made me wonder what will be the next M car to potentially be come a future classic in the next 20+ years.

So I Simply narrowed it down to the most limited and powerful M cars to date.
M2cs, M3cs & M4cs.

Before I give my opinion and why I wanted to lay out some specs.

M2cs
Production #'s: Only 2,200 units
Engine: S55
HP:444
Torque:406 lbs/ft
0-60mph:3.8
Transmission: Manual
Upgrades: reduced weight
dual branch exhaust
Adaptive M Suspension
CF Front splitter
CF Sideview mirrors
CF Rear spolier
CF New rear diffuser
CF roof
CF Center transmission tunnel

M3cs
Production #'s: Only 1,200 units
Engine:S55
HP:453
Torque:443 lbs/ft
0-60mph:3.9
Transmission: DCT
Upgrades:265/35ZR-19 front
285/30ZR-20 rear
Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires
M Adaptive Dampers reprogrammed
CF Front splitter
CF Rear spolier
CF Driveshaft
CF New rear diffuser

M4cs
Production #'s: Only 3,000 units
Engine:S55
HP:454
Torque:442 lbs/ft
0-60mph:3.9
Transmission: DCT
Upgrades: lower and stiffer springs, dampers and anti-roll bars from M4C
265/35x19s front
285/30x20s rear
Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires
M Adaptive Dampers reprogrammed
Electronic power steering reprogrammed
CF reinforced plastic hood (25% lighter)
CF Front splitter
CF Rear spolier
CF Driveshaft
CF New rear diffuser
Lighter Front seats
Naked Door cards
OLED Tail Lights

Im Sure I missed a few things. However, even tho the M4cs Has the highest production numbers I think it will age the best. It is the 1st ever M4 produced by BMW along with it has some M4 GTS parts. With the M3cs having the lower production numbers and the M2Cs Being Manual its a toss up for me for the #2 spot.

What do you think?

I think the M2cs in manual with CCBs will be the most desired variant for collector status 25years from now.

The M3cs would be next bec its the top performance F80 M3.

M4cs will always be outshined by GTS in terms of collectibility.

all your CF specs dont matter and you dont have it 100% right either
-M3 also has the CF hood and same seats as the M4 other than colour/materials
-M3/4 CS dont have CF mirrors
-M4CS definitely doesnt have lower springs, has biggest wheel gap of any F8x

wheels are a big differentiator vs non CS.

M4 CS will be last in value just based on current M4 vs M3 used prices and 3x more production will not help that.

Not sure why you quote the M2cs 6MT to be quicker to 60mph than the DCT M3cs and M4cs, because it isn't the case. DCT M2cs is in fact slightly slower, 6MT even more so.

Also of note, both the M3/4cs have the base less stiff front anti-roll bar to reduce understeer. Further, in the US, the M3/4cs cannot be had with PSC2 tires, they come with 255/35R19 and 285/30R20 PSS. M4cs seats are not any lighter than the CP ones, they just have alcantara side bolstering for better grip. M4cs also has a slightly downgraded sound system to reduce weight. Both M3/4cs have a single zone climate control with a lightweight center console and arm rest delete to increase elbow room. You are also forgetting DSC/ABS/e-Diff reprogramming. And those gorgeous 763M wheels...

And I dont believe any will hold value particularly well. They will depreciate like any other M3/4. The only reason the E30 holds so well, it's because it was the first and it was produced in relatively low volume.

i think the m2cs will be the one to hold on too. Its got all the media hype behind it right now. They are moving at or near sticker price. Its quite a bit better than the M2 comp as it has adaptive suspension and a cf roof finally. the ccb and the fact they are keeping the manual for the CS variant is also huge. AND they are making it more limited than the M4cs.

I can't say for sure if it will be an investment. they are charging alot for what is basically a 2015 m4 transplanted into a f87 chassis. at best you might make your money back in say 10-15 years... which is more than i can say for any m3/m4 variant.

How about shorter term value retention? I see M4 CS cars with low miles around $70K-$80K. It's tempting to get one if in 4-5 years I could sell it for say $60K. But somehow I don't think that will be the case. More like $30K - $40K or worse?

I think m3cs has different seat as m4cs. M4cs seat has alcantara on the side but m3cs doesn't

GTS will be valuable. Doubtful the others will. Look at E46 CSL prices vs E46 CS - somewhere between 2x and 3x cheaper for the CS, and they were made in more limited numbers than the F8x CS cars.

There is no such thing as a factory E46 M3 CS. The E46 M3 CS nomenclature was a BMW UK only marketing exercise and was nothing other than a "Competition package" E46 M3 as sold in the ROW.

I stumbled upon an E46 M3 CS for sale ad last year and discovered that UK only CS marketing thing. Very odd

IMO, 20+ years from now will be very different than now or 20+ years ago. The cars we are driving and the roads today aren't so much different than in the 1990's; more efficient and powerful engines, more turbo's, more electronics but generally more or less the same. However, 20+ years from now, in the 2040's, ICE engines will be rare if not gone or prohibited.

There will be self-driving cars on public roads in the 2040's to which cars dated >20 years ago cannot coexist unless retrofitted. But doing such modifications will likely be cost prohibitive to all but exotics like Pagani or Koenigsegg or possibly your less common Ferrari. As for your average BMW 2-Series or 3-Series BMW's with an M badge in 20+ years? Fuggedaboutit.

[PS: Also... at the rate BMW is diluting the M badge, it'll be viewed with a sarcastic and then a in about 20 years or less].

All depends on when BMW decides to hybridize their M cars. (Merc is using hyrbid power in next gen C63)

If the next gen M2CS(L) has a manual option. That will probably be the last one to buy new and hold.
