Source: The S55 in my M2C made the EXACT same noise upon cold starts. Dealer tightened the cams, the noise never returned. This is NEITHER wastegate rattle NOR the valvetronic motor.
Since making this post I've heard several M3/4s (2018 and newer) including a brand new car make the same noise. I doubt every single one of them had a faulty cam. Having done some research this is an extremely common noise and can usually be resolved by doing more frequent oil changes.

bump has there been any clear solution to this ticking noise? The weather is getting colder and I've been noticing it quite clearly these days.

Getting an oil change asap first

Only other thing that it could be would be the timing, mine developed this after a track day and i took it to BMW and it was the exhaust timing was slightly out due to too much tension on the chain.

Mine still does it when cold, the first 5 min also, I have tried everything, but am starting to be convinced it is what others have said , the cams need to be tightened again, I just wish someone would post exactly what bolts were tightened so I can fix it....
