Reliability of M4 Engine

I have a 340i with the B58 and I'm considering upgrading to an M4. The one think I really like about the B58 is how reliable it is. I haven't read too many bad things about the M4 reliability except for the pushrod bearing issue. A local seller is selling one that had to get the engine replaced at 25,000mi when they found metal shavings in his oil. This obviously freaked me out. Wondering what I can do to ensure I don't run into this problem.

Can paying for a simple oil analysis test catch an issue like this? Is there any other recommendations for when shopping around to ensure you don't get a car with this issue?

This is the first I have heard of this "pushrod bearing issue". This is definitely not a widespread issue at all. The s55 has been extremely reliable overall. Other than people spinning their crank hub after tuning, there are really no known major issues for stock engines.

There is no pushrod bearing issue with these cars. All you need to know is that as far as ///M engines go, the ones in these cars are likely the most reliable ever. I’d buy with confidence.

It wouldn't be an issue because the S55 is a DOHC engine, not a pushrod.

I think OP is mixing up terms and engines.Maybe he is referring to the rod bearing issues on the S65 and S54, previous M engines. This gen S55 M engine is rock solid and very reliable.

S55 engine does not have push rod or bearing issue. These are the only 3 repeating issues I see that relate to the under the hood area.

1) Spun Crank Hub (1% chance on stock, higher if tuned)
2) Leaking Intercooler (You can tell if the intercooler on top needs coolant, it should NEVER need coolant).
3) Coolant Expansion Tank Leak (This one is closest to the front bumper).

I haven't seen anyone having the typical BMW oil leak from the oil filter housing.

Even if you have a spun crank hub, most people are able to just re-time the engine and replace the crank hub which is roughly a 5K repair. Haven't read any post requiring an entire engine being replaced from spun crank hub during normal driving.

The crank hub issue is way less than 1% chance even on stock.

Leaking intercooler and coolant expansion tanks leaking are becoming more common as the cars age.

Ive also heard a few cases of valve covers/gaskets and OFHG gaskets leaking as well.

A few cases of ignition coils and injector failures.

And that's about it. The engine itself is very robust, its mostly the ancillaries that fail over time and with wear and tear.

Valve cover/pcv. I just experienced this myself and noticed on FB that several others have also experienced this. It's not a cheap repair as it requires a new valve cover ($600), gaskets, pcv, pcv hose and labor. Symptoms sound like a screeching sound when at low rpm or idle. I originally thought it was due to accessory belts or tensioner (which I replaced at the same time). Definitely much more common than crank hub for cars per FB.

I'd almost suggest the engine is pretty solid. Buy with confidence as a majority of the engine issues I would say are outliers.

My experience with this car is has never been with the engine and more with the interior. My stitching busted, the seat emblem cracked on both, and small rattles that for the most part are fixed.
