Thanks. I had the last V1 in all my other BMWs and worked great. I was going to try shutting off gesture control today I'm not sure if I can shut off the laser component on a V1?

My has jammers in it like you had. Great until they figure out it's your car. Lol

Yeah that is a PITA. Check out this thread and hopefully it can answer a few of your questions. Easiest way is to turn off laser on your V1.

Stay aware and alert primarily, but I do have an old ( 12 year old ) V1 without any updates. It ends up being muted more often than not from so many false alarms, and I use it visually more than anything else in the corner of my eye. But it still adds some info to the situation. Otherwise, on familiar roads I kind of know where to expect them and remain vigilant.

I was about to get a fresh/updated V1, but the Uniden R7 looks super neat at first glance. Will need to check this out further.

I got a 1100ft lidar ticket thrown out by the judge.

the farther you are the larger the beam becomes and other factors such as angle cause it to read 'faster'.

I was riding a motorcycle when I received the citation. less frontal area to hit as well.

This. Many people dont understand the importance of good filtering, a detector that is updated regularly for free via cord and computer is a huge plus. Escort struggles with this, and Valentine makes you ship it out every time for 100$. Thats a waste of perfectly good money IMO. The R7 will have free updates and they are very good at keeping up with it.

Yeah, thats why you'll see law enforcement hitting under 500ft most of the time. The farther the target, the harder it is to get an accurate reading. Radar is point and shoot, very easy.

V1 and laser jammers. laser jammers saved me when a cop hit me at 110mph. I was able to get it down to 73mph in a 65mph before i killed my jammers so he could get my speed. Ended up with a warning for speed and a ticket for no front tag.

As a highway driver is it worth dropping the $ on a limited use radar detector or put it all into a jammer? $2k is stiff but necessary

With a radar, you can slow down after detection of Ka/K bands. The signal starts weak and then gets stronger as you approach the cop. If you get lasered, you're basically screwed and the cop has instantly has read your speed and you won't have ample time to slow down (from what I understand).

I am contemplating getting a laser jammer in addition to my R3.

I was just just sticker shocked. Quoted $6k for jammers. I need to shop that. Fortunately no metal on front of M550xi. No front tag or bracket. Seems steep.

I was thinking jammer until I learned it is a criminal offence 'to interfere with a officer performing his duty' quite different than simply 'reading' an incoming signal... Which, nonetheless, may also be illegal but only a violation of the 'motor vehicle act.' In the former you get a criminal record while in the latter case, only a ticket... Good to know the laws in your state or province....

I believe that Valentine updates some hardware as well if needed. But costs goes up as well. I looked into getting mine "updated". I have never updated mine in ~12 years that I have had it, so at this point its basically replaced with a new unit, and you trade in the old one, and its like $350 to do so. The false alarms from driving assist crap has only become horrible in the last year or two. I would rather get a new one and sell the old one ( or use it in a second car and gain some convenience of not moving one back and forth ) at that price.

On the F80 I still run my 9500ci with laser shifters (front/rear) that I bought new in 2012 that was in my old 135i. I regularly update it and its still working wonderfully. Also use Waze as a backup.

On my E46 I use a 9500i from about that same time with regular updates and that too works wonderfully.

Both, if your getting jammers id reccomend the ALP system its the best on the market and i wanna say about ~1500. Spend the other 500 on the radar detector if you can save labor costs lol

No way is 6k a fair price, who ever said that is tryign to rip you off. I'd recommend the ALP jammers as its the best on the market and they are constantly offering updates for the jammers if needed. I want to say its around ~1500 for them uninstalled.

Most states allow Laser jammers but some do not. Definitely worth looking into if you get a set

Apologies for reviving an old thread, but curious as to where folks have their detectors installed. In my province, they are illegal, but I might be willing to take the risk.

Not interested in a blendmount as that would be obvious if I’m ever stopped for a reason other than speeding. Also, I have my dashcam tucked under the drivers visor so it is virtually invisible (when the visor is down, which almost always).

Does anyone have their detector tucked up by headliner on the passenger side, so that visor hides it?

Exactly! Detector is close to useless for Lidar/Laser; cops will already have a speed reading by the time the detector triggers an alarm. I simply switch off my V1 laser detection and rely on my ALP system instead.

See https://www.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh...php?p=24138686 for my ALP install.

Those who run both Waze and a detector - what are your experiences?

I have been a radar detector guy for years (V1 and Escort ix) but stopped using them due to falses. My setup now is just my 2 eyes and Waze on Carplay...sad to say but its honestly worked the best.
