Cold start Tapping/Ticking Noise
Have had a intermittent ticking/tapping noise when first starting up the beast recently. Coming from engine bay and disappears after 3/4 minutes.
Only really noticed it now the weather has cooled down. Sounds like lifter tick. Normal or something to look into? |

Sounds like this, maybe a bit quieter. Disappears after 2 mins. Also doesn't always do it. Think driving short distances makes it happen somehow. Stock. 2018 M3 CP |

Mine makes the same ticking noise at startup but after driving it usually goes away. I just assumed it was the injectors since GDI engines can be a little noisy.
Mine is going in for service in the next month or so, guess I'll have them check it out just in case.

Mines been doing this on and off for the last 15k miles with apparently no ill effects. Doesn't do it unless engine is on. Also noticed it doesn't do it if I've driven it longer on the last journey. I thought it would be related to the hydraulic lifters ?

This is NOT the valvetronic motor noise. That is a different noise when/if it acts up. This is wastegate rattle. Again, had mine diagnosed when the engine was torn apart.

I agree it definitely does not seem like the valetronic motor noise in the slightest. This noise occurs on cold start and disappears after 2 minutes. Some people say it's the hydraulic lifters ticking and had them replaced under warranty but then only for the noise to return lol.
Definitely seems closer to a lifter ticking issue then a waste are one though but I could be wrong. |

Found another video with a similar noise, going by the comments in this one looks like this 'issue' is quite common to say the least.

I had the same noise and I changed my oil and used this: https://rislone.com/product/engine-treatment-100qr/
And the noise went away. It’s just a dirty lifter. Just substitute one bottle of oil for this. You can also go the liquimoly route and use this as well: https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/hyd...i-moly-lm20004 I’ve used both and they both work well. It’s just lifter tick |

Same engine noise when cold (first 2-3 min)
After testing all engine with ISTA (Valvetronic actuator, vanos, vacuum line ) i thing the noise is related to Wastegate and classic bmw injectors

Mine is easy to replicate as long as the car is cold, once it's warmed up it goes away. They had the car for a few days though after I dropped it off because they ended up replacing the front brakes/rotors so I know they heard it at some point. They never made a comment about it in the paper work so I guess it didn't raise any flags.

Once again Try the risoline. Replace one quart of oil with that product. It’s magic. Solved my ticking. Could be dirty lifters.

I had same issue and the dealership replaced my hydraulic lifters and the sound went away until about 60k kms. I switched oil from BMW M TwinPower 0w40 to Valvoline Synpower 0w40 and the lifter tick is only heard for about 10 seconds on cold start then it goes away
