Blind spot monitoring/detection function

Hopefully someone far more knowledgeable than I can let me know if the blind spot function visible in the wing mirrors can be retro-fitted?

My car is highly specc'd with Competition and Executive packages if that makes any difference to enabling the blind spot functionality?

Thanks

It can but it's not an easy task (relatively speaking)
Also note that the blind spot function is ok at best on these vehicles. If the adjacent car is moving fast past you, the blind spot will not trigger. Not sure if it's my vehicle.
It is not as good as other manufacturers such as Mercedes

Thanks for the info. Much appreciated........yes I agree the Mercedes version works very well, as does Audi - hence my desire to have it added to the BMW - appreciate the comparison

Blind spot on BMW is fairly useless to me. Unless it can trigger an audio warning, I don't notice it. I am so used the audio warning on my merc that when I switch the BMW, I never notice the steering wheel vibration from BSM.
With all the rough roads in the bay area, the wheel is vibrating all the time :P

BMW’s version is not nearly as good as Audi’s because it is not as visible. No way would I invest in retrofitting.

It is very slow to register there's a vehicle in your blind spot. It also doesn't make noise which makes it less effective. I'm so used to turning my head all the time it's not that useful to me. The false positive is more annoying really. Most other vehicles that have this function registers false positives when you make a turn at an intersection and there's a car parked there or a pedestrian standing at the curb. Sometimes you signal as you come up to an exit and it triggers because of the crash barrier next to the vehicle.

Why not opt for aspheric European side view mirrors? They give a great view along the side of the car. I have both sides, but you may only need the driver's side. I don't see a big benefit with the passenger side. I got mine from IND.

I do have the blind side monitoring and admit it has saved me on a couple of occasions but I have never experienced the option from another brand.

The European side view mirrors are perhaps a more pragmatic choice.....and IND is what supplier?

I actually like the BSM on this car (compared to a Volvo and a Merc). I think this car does a nice job of picking up fast moving cars entering my blind spot compared to others.
