Fixed - full brake upgrade

I can confirm that the brakes are now sorted on my car. I am now wondering if it is calliper issues as everyone seems to be having rotors changed and the problem reoccurs - same as what I did originally. I've now got around 2,500 miles on my Alcon Big Brake Kit and a very, very hard track day at Brands Hatch on Wednesday and there is no judder whatsoever.

I agree, caliper issue is pretty much the only thing that makes sense at this point. I've noticed with mine, the harder I brake, the less I feel the judder so it would make sense. My next step is to get at least my front calipers rebuilt and see if the problem goes away.

Glad yours is gone and acting as they should!

Be interested to know if a calliper rebuild fixes it, regardless of the fact I've now changed the brakes. I hope it does for you!

2016 ZCP here with 42k miles and noticed this judder a few thousand miles ago. I can feel the vibration in the steering wheel and it ONLY happens when braking from ~50mph down to 40mph - no other range gives off a vibration and judder. I ordered new OEM rotors for the front and pads too but never installed them. I was going to within the next 2 weeks but if that won't solve this then what's the point?

After reading this thread it still seems like there is no definitive answer on this... is there anything else I can check before I go forward with installing new parts (which may not fix the issue)? Also worthwhile to say my issue is not causes by uneven pad deposits...

I would probably replace the front wheel hubs and rebuild the calipers along with doing the rotors/pads (at least for the fronts). I know it's kind of silly to just throw money at the car when no one really knows what's causing the issue, but it seems like the people that have done all of that have the problem go away permanently.

Definitely silly but I totally get where you’re coming from…. What an anomaly this is. How is there no service bulletin on this already ?

Full big brake kit installed so yes, rotors and pads replaced but also callipers too. Previously replaced rotors and pads along with one of the front hubs but the problem reappeared after about 1,000 to 1,500 miles. With the full replacement BBK, I no longer have an issue.

Awesome man, I m having the same issue at 1200 miles. Looks like my next mod has been chosen for me. Seems unlikely to be hubs as it's never present under acceleration or roll.

Glad you resolved the issue

I haven't had a chance to get the front calipers rebuilt yet, but I'm hoping that'll be the fix.

I'm going to push for the dealer to replace mine.

If they end up doing it, please let me know! I'd rather try to convince them instead of doing it myself, but after BMW NA got involved last time I don't hold out much hope of it working.

I finally switched to the Ferodo 2500’s in May, immediately after bedding them the judder was reduced by about 75%. After several months and 7k of driving it is 100% gone. Every now and then it will come back very slightly but if I do a couple hard stops on the highway from like 80-100 mph down to 30 back to back it seems to clean them up and the issue is gone again. Now the brake dust on the 666’s is another thing lol

The powerstop carbon ceramics I originally tried definitely made it worse not better.

Unhappy Powder coated rims warping rotors

I know this thread is older, but I thought I might share info that could help someone. Or maybe someone could help me. I bought a CPO with 10,000 miles on it in Sept 2022. X4 M40i. It has been at the dealership off and on ever since then. They have replaced rotors 3 times and pads. (New rotors would be ruined within a couple of weeks) The rotors are warped from extreme heat. BMW was going to do a trade assist with me because they could not fix it and my car had been in the shop 4 times. Once for 2 weeks. They replaced both rear wheel bearings, put the car on the lift and drove it and found out it was actuating the brakes without pressing the pedal. They replaced the ESC module to attempt to fix it. When the field engineer came to check it out, he saw it had powder coated 21 inch 718M rims. He blamed all the issues on the powder coating and BMW will do nothing for me now. I did not powder coat the wheels, they came on the certified pre owned car. I assumed they were stock. I know a lot about the M40i, but i do not keep track of wheel colors. It was listed as 718M and no mention of powder coating. Seems the engineer found something not stock that he could blame it on to put it all on me. Even if i spent a bunch of money to fix it, i have no guarantee it will work. All the dealership has done is offer to give me a low trade in quote and try to get me to buy another M40i at full price.

I have video of the car with the wheels on it that the dealer sent me before i purchased the car. It was my fourth BMW in a row and to make it worse, i purchased a brand new M440i about 3 weeks before they screwed me.
