Received my key from Gates. I really can't tell if its OEM or not. But it looks and feels solid. its definitely worth it IMO.

i had mailed gates to check if he would do this conversion for f26 keys; however, the email ID on his site seem to be incorrect.

Can someone help me with their correct support email ID?

Has anyone brought their new key in for service at a BMW dealer yet? I'm wondering if they're now unable to read the key.

Haha. Hmm... intrigued. What are we losing by doing this conversion, besides the internal cut key? Trying to think of anything they may possibly require the physical cut key for. I guess worse case you just get a key cut.

thanks, I talked to him after a brief chat on instagram. he asked me to mail my f26 key so that he can give a shot. however, this is the first he is attempting this conversion on x4..he told me that he can swap to older shell if it doesn't work.

Thanks,

I just received my key. Looks and feels genuine. But I noticed my trunk button didn't work when parked with the rear of the car higher than front. When I got home the trunk button worked.

Not sure why as I don't recall that ever happening with the original key fob

Interesting, that seems like a trunk problem more than a key problem, glad it works now though!!

Got mine back today and boy was it worth the wait! For those who are on the fence bc it's not an OE key, you're missing out. This has to be an OEM key bc it's pretty high quality like what you'd expect from BMW. If the OE key casing was spruced from China then the Chinese company who made them probably made these on the side haha. The Chinese could probably don't give a rats ass about patent infringement, copyright, etc.

Anyways, key is fully functional and works as expected. Comfort access range is just like the OE key if not stronger. No complaints there. The best part, it looks like it belongs.

Awesome pictures and update, thanks! Last question... technically you could only send in one key fob to be upgraded, while keeping the spare key as the older fob, correct? That way you have a true OEM as a fallback, worst case scenario? If so, I'm in.

Yes, I kept my spare key and it's now my backup key in case anything happens!

Amazing

I just recieved it a few days ago and it was amazing, better than OEM quality of the f82 key. 10x better. My oem m4 key is cheap Honda quality vs this new one.

What is bad quality, the original BMW bigger key fob? I never thought it was bad quality, just big.

FYI here's some trivia for you all. According to my BMW dealer, the older key fob is nicknamed "the nugget" and the newer fob is called "the sabretooth" since that's what they resemble.

Anyone with a gates key willing to post their PCB for research? Genuinely curious which one he used. You don't have to cut up the x5m key to remove the PCB, it comes apart after you take out 1 screw. Thanks in advance :-)
