Rear differential fluid Change 6MT

I'm at 49,000 miles; just done today. Tech had two bottles not sure how many oz in each; that's been a debate how many bottles/oz needed.

Car definitely feels smoother shifting into gears. No clunking just butter smooth. I also had the oil changed.

I'm posting Incase someone is on the fence about the value of having this done.

Also had it done at a well respected performance shop. They let me in to look at the car and meet the tech.

The BMW dealer wanted $475 for this 20 minute service.

Anyway just thought I'd share...

Yea you’d be surprised how easy it is to work on this car.

As long as you can get the car up on Jack stands, the rear diff is super easy, probably the easiest than other maintenance items.

The manual transmission fluid change is also easy as is the oil change.

I also just did my spark plugs/coil packs and changed out my charge pipes. This was a bit more involved, but not hard at all.

Brake jobs are easy too!

Changing the diff fluid should have no effect on how gear changes feel. Nonetheless it's appropriate to change at 50k miles.

Probably placebo but seemed gear changes were smooth after oil changed and diff fluid

Was also my first seeing underneath the car.

Very neat and the look of the suspension parts were impressive.

Best to change the rear diff gear oil and the transmission oil (if you have MT) at the same time.

Easy to do both. Do not need to see the dealer for this work. Gonna do this at home.

Thanks!

I'm looking into transmission fluid change now.🤘🏾

You do need torque wrench

For diff they used some pump device to put fluid back in diff case

Sadly this independent shop quoted me $767.00 🥳

Revised quote $172 🤓

These diff oil change prices seem way off; my dealer just changed mine (at 45k) for $95.

I DIY'ed my diff and trans (6MT) at 30k miles following the old school Mike Miller schedule, probably a bit overkill as I could have waited a bit longer. But as others have mentioned, these maintenance items are so easy to do on this car I did not mind. I did have the dealer do my trans at the 1200 mile break in service. Was not that bad at $165 and was convenient at the time, but I won't have a dealer or Indy do it in the future since it is so easy.
