So I also agree with you that the black exhaust tips look better than the chrome ones on the car. But never say never my friend ..... You may find, as I did (and many other enthusiasts), that the tips seem a bit "small" after a while. That is why I went with the BMS tips. Same basic style as the OEM black, slanted tips, but just a bit bigger to add a slightly more aggressive look to the car IMO. The few times my car has been to the dealer I always get complements on the little cosmetic mods I have done, the BMS tips being one of them

Check out my before and after pics below.....

Stock tips.... wimpy, wimpy, wimpy.....

BMS tips... HEFTY, HEFTY, HEFTY.....

As far as painting the muffler black, I would also agree with you, too. It has been on my todo list for a while, especially since it is a very cheap mod for this car, but adds a very noticeable cosmetic improvement.

on topic - well done on the diy really invokes me to get my hands dirty.
I did not paint the tips as they are already black. I painted the muffler.

On the ZCP/competition package the tips are black but the muffler is still unpainted metal. Since it hangs low on our cars it’s an eye sore. One of the first mods I did as well. Add a diffuser and it completely enhances the rear end.

How many coats of paint did you apply? I'm planning to paint mine also.
I did one. However, I still need to do one more.
The paint I got was a little bit too oily. It was a pain to apply.

To those who have done the same, what paint did you use?

Thx.

* OEM rear diffuser! (I personally think that the rear of the M4 looks 1000000000 better with the diffuser on. I don't care about the spoiler at all but the diffuser is a MUST)

And last, but not least, a black muffler!
I've just painted mine and I will be able to really see the difference during the day.
Best MOD ever! Lol...

Thanks.

Did mine last night. Took 15 minutes. The best mod especially for MGM and darker colors. It just blends in now. Thanks for the tip!

Just shake up the can and point and shoot! You can put some news paper around the muffler to protect against over spray if you would like. Or just bring the spray can closer in towards the muffler so you dont accidentally miss. Its a muffler so it doesnt have to be perfect, just spray all of the visible areas and enjoy.

Did you notice any discoloration on the inside of exhaust tips? I'm trying to decide whether to get ones like yours or straight billet tips.

I have had the BMS tips on my car for about a year now, street driving only. After about 9 months in, they did start to discolor slightly - but not as bad as others have mentioned (for others, the worst discoloration occurred after track days due to the heat IIRC). Right now it does not bother me that much, but if it gets worse, I will probably just get them powder coated since these tips are the size and style that I like.

I have an Active Autoworks exhaust with black tips (that I had powdercoated) and I painted the cans black. Here is the progression of that adventure. First pic is before paint, second is after paint, and third is with a carbon fiber diffuser. I just used some high temp spray paint. I had a giant sheet of painters plastic that I draped over the back half of the car and had enough to cut and position behind the cans I was painting and cover up the rest of the underside. Secured with the blue painters tape. Then I sprayed about 4 coats on it. I was just going to do the end caps with black but I didnt want the exhaust to look silly on a lift. So I sprayed both of the cans in their entirety. I thought it turned out pretty good.

Buy a cheap throw-away brush from Home Depot, put down some newspaper underneath and simply brush it on. Took me two coats - first coat takes about an hour to completely dry. Wait an hour for second coat to dry and then drive around for 30 minutes or so for it to heat up and cure. Done.

Photo for reference. I'd still like to know how difficult would it be to take it off and spray paint it.
