Opening Exhaust Valves Before Starting
OK, so I just want to go through this again. I'm pretty sure I understand how to open the valves on the exhaust before starting the engine, but it's not doing it on my car.
M4, Competition Pack, MPE. It's an LCI. 1) I press the start button without pressing the brake. 2) I select "Sport" or "Sport Plus" on the throttle settings. 3) I depress the accelerator pedal fully (I've tried every different method of pressing it from fast slow, fully, not fully), and then I should hear the valves opening. I do not hear this ever. If I start the engine normally and in "efficient" mode, select "Sport", and then tap the throttle, there is a very distinct "click" before the exhaust note changes. I just can't get the valves to open before I start the engine. Any help? |

the valves are open on start for a brief second to get that start up blip then they close.
with my valve controller I close the valves on start up and I hear them close. This is how I know they are open at start for a brief moment. (17M4ZCP) only way you can keep them open at start up is to disable them, tune them, or valve controller

I'm inclined to disagree. I have the M3 Comp (complete with MPE) and it works on mine.
Press Start without the brake. Activate Sport Plus (set on M2 for me), press the accelerator a touch and then start as normal. The only reason why I don't do it much is because the sound, whilst seriously loud, isn't as nice as it should be - in my opinion. But then that's a whole different discussion... H |

Are you holding and pressing down the accelerator when you start the car? If you do will get more of a roar and a few pops.
However unlike the non CP models you cannot blip the throttle while the car is off to trick the flaps into opening. As stated, the CP exhaust valves are set to open when you start and then close shortly after. This enables a slight surge in noise on start up |

Maybe not when the car is off but I think you can when the car is on (by pressing the Start button but without pressing the brake).
I might be alone in this but I will try again tomorrow. I'm convinced it works. Either that or I'm going mad... H |

I have 2016 M4 comp and it works with mine. Definitely a lot louder when I do the process vs. normal startup. Try using your M1 or M2 buttons vs. the throttle button..
Hope that helps |

I just went out and tried it again. It definitely works. I'm not going mad. Mine is also a 2016 M3 Comp so maybe it doesn't work on 2017 LCI models?
Anyway, to reiterate: 1. Press Start button without pressing the brake. 2. Activate Sport Plus 3. Press and release the accelerator to open the valves. You don't have to keep your foot on the pedal. 4. Press the brake, hit the Start button. 5. Enjoy the noise - which, personally, I don't find to be as nice sounding as it could be on the MPE. But it's loud. Really, really loud. That part I love! H |

Inclined to disagree too. Was able to do this on my car.
That said, to retain control I grabbed a Bluetooth adapter and the bimmerlink iOS app. Prior to starting car you can hear the click as the valve moves. Makes for fun, albeit I only use on wkds when I remember as I don't like leaving the Bluetooth adapter plugged in.

Not sure I understand the problem.
I start my car (M4 ZCP) in economy and the revs are held at 1100rpm with the valves open for a few seconds. After maybe 10 seconds the revs drop to around 900 rpm and the valves close. If I switch to Sport or Sport+ during that initial 10 seconds, the valves remain open. |

Whatever people are saying about the valves opening on THEIR car, it's not on mine. I know what to do but it's simply not working.
Clearly it's something that's been changed on the latest builds. |

Did anyone ever figure this out? I used to be able to hear the valves open, but they do not do this anymore. I thought it was something in the fuse box I could've broke when I installed my dashcam. Still can't seem to find what caused it. Mine is 2016 non ZCP (AWE switch path exhaust)
