Mine actually were not cracked that bad - nothing like some of pictures posted on the forums. I might not have even noticed them were it not for the forums, at least not until the cracks became worse and were more noticeable. When I told my dealer about the issue, I showed them pics from the forum, admitting that mine were not that bad (but still cracking). Fortunately, my dealer was very understanding and reasonable about the issue, repairing it when they did, as the issue was not going to get any better with age.

Well technically, the dealer is supposed to replace the parts with what originally came with the car... However, the black ones cost the same as the silver ones, and the install procedure is the same. The additional justification I used was that I did not want my seats to be taken apart again when the new silver ones failed again....
Of course, it helps when you have a good SA, and you have a good relationship with your SA..

Yes, they should be replaced under warranty (mine were). Whether or not you can get the dealer to substitute the black ones for the silver ones (if your car came from the factory with silver ones) will be dependent on the relationship you have with your SA.

My cracked silver badges were replaced in January under warranty. The car is 2017 M3, so it came with silver. BMW replaced them with the black M3 badges used in 2018+ models.

Pretty simple actually, it falls under the new car warranty that comes with all new cars sold in the US - which is 4yrs/50k miles (not to be confused with new car maintenance which is 3yrs/36k miles). For the most part, any non-wear item (like tires or wiper blades for example) are covered under the new car warranty. The seat emblems are not considered a wear item and are therefore covered under the new car warranty. However, new car warranties (and maintenance warranties), and what they cover, will vary from country to country.

I was not aware. When I ordered my car in August 2015 BMW Belux gave 2 years / 200k km warranty. The warranty got extended to 3 years and unlimited mileage for cars ordered after 27th October 2015. The badges on my seats were cracked after two years so not covered under warranty but it never bothered me as they are now after 3 years and 4 months still very lightly cracked.
Reading that the leather of the seats have to ve removed to install new ones I wander how much it would cost me to replace them with the black badges. |

I'm not sure what the official BMW service procedure is, but it does not require anything but part of the front of the seat to be undone. It's actually a pretty easy DIY, there is a thread on it somewhere. The black emblems are around $200.

If you get the silver, they will crack, there is no updated silver badge. When you look closely at the black ones, you can see that they're built differently.

I asked my S.A he said they are covered under warranty and its not a big deal to get them out, takes a little bit of time.
