Stock Exhaust Questions
I am considering replacing my stock 2015 M3 exhaust due to its lame sound like everyone else in this forum and have several questions. I am new to replacing an exhaust so please bear with me.
What do people do with the stock exhaust once it is removed? Do you keep it or throw it away? I don't have any spare room in my house to store it so I plan on throwing it away but I was wondering why would you keep it? I own my car and plan on holding on to it at least till the next gen 2022 BMW hybrid M3 comes out I assume that a performance exhaust it will add a slight amount to the resale value of the car. Also, In California, will replacing the exhaust affect whether the car passes the California smog tests? I do not want an exhaust which pollutes more than mandated in the state. |

Don't count on an aftermarket exhaust adding any resale value -- reason why many people keep their stock systems and swap back before they sell/trade.
Understanding you don't have extra room, sell the old one. I think they go for $500 +/- |

People till to keep their exhaust in case they sell the car. Putting the stock exhaust and selling the after market exhaust will generally yield more return than selling the exhaust with the car. But unless you get a used system, 2k is very low budget for an exhaust. But I have to agree that DP with stock exhaust sounds much better that stock alone. Replacing exhaust should not effect emissions at all. Switching to DP will fail you 99.9% of the time.

Who would be in the market to buy a used stock F80 M3 exhaust, even at $500? Do they fit all the 3 series cars and make those perform or sound any better? I do not want to try to go cheaper by installing down pipes because it will make the car fail California smog tests. |

You can post for "feelers" in the classified section. As for Downpipes, do et! Keep your stock downpipes when it comes to inspection/dealer visits and swap em back on. |

This is going to sound crazy to a few of you and some of you will agree.
The stock exhaust with downpipes and open valves sounds better than a lot of aftermarket systems. I've heard several to compare. It is very aggressive and sounds really good once the stock exhaust gets a few thousand miles on it. I'd start there and if you don't like it after awhile, then switch to an aftermarket system. |

Id start with unplugging the valves and drive with that for a few hundred then decide if you need to spend the cash. At least that's I did this morning. I'll see where it leads. I think the next step for me for if I want more might be to add the AA mid pipe and last would be deciding to go with a full system. So far valve delete is pretty sweet might just save me a bundle.

The exhaust is louder and more interactive which I like but the sound is unpleasant and does not sound like a sports car. I have not disabled active sound though so I will try that next. So it sounds like most people do not replace their entire exhaust but just their downpipes or leave them completely stock with the free valve mod and active sound off? I feel sorry for all the venders selling exhaust systems |

Oh oh, shucks you got me on that one.
I was hoping that it would sound like a supercharged 5L V8 like that found in the Jaguar F-Type R. With the M3 being an inline twin-turbo 6, I am guessing that to get that sound, I should have gotten the Jaguar.... A more realistic sound would be the AWE exhaust: Anyway, I will try driving with the active sound off. |

You should still be able to pass emission with the aftermarket exhaust as long you keep stock downpipes
