Correct. I passed smog this morning. Hopefully someone who has problems in the future can find this and it'll help.

EDIT: This was done with one drive cycle without engine braking on a highway to 20mph, and no other driving except for to the smog shop. My EVAP (which isn't needed in CA) must have went green on the way to get smogged.

Hey Phoenix, I've been reading the threads, yours especially. My first smog after 8 years is due 2/28 at the latest. I'm in the same exact situation as you were. I purchased a diag. tool for emissions, working on getting all green check marks, but my question is, what tool do I need in order to match up DME code with the orginal, like you did before taking it there. I flashed BM3 to stock, then locked. I'm just really scared that i might still get flagged. Also, worried if i do get flagged, that they might put that on CarFax. Any help would me majorly appreciated. Thanks in advance!!!

yeah, I am also wondering what tool can be used to check that the CAL ID and CVN for a match. You can see that Phoenix is using a hardware tool with a screen in post 126. I usually use an OBD plug with an iPhone app, but I am not sure that any app will be able to read the CVN and CAL ID.

ok, just did some research and you need a scanner or app with mode 9 to get them.

Very cool, I'll have to check if my current diag tool has it, otherwise I'll pick one up on amazon.

I did a quick drive cycle, like phoenix without the breaking to 20 mile mph, and went from 4/8 green check marks, to 8/8 green check marks. I just need to match up the codes (hopefully with mode 9).

If you end up doing it before i do pls share the outcome, I will do the same.

Thanks!!!

Phoenix9110 What diag tool did you use to read the IDs? My F80 is due for inspection, wanna see if I can skip the dealer programming and just flash back to MHD's "stock".

EDIT: I see there's Mode 9 on most OBD 2 scanners that show CVN/CALIDs.

It's very simple, either on the bm3 App or their site, go to: My Maps>Stock Tune>Re-Lock DME. It only takes about 3-5 minutes. Also, don't get worried if it hangs up on 1%, it'll start working after a minute or two. Good luck!

Just Passed CA Smog Test

Just wanted to let everyone know that I just got home from passing my Smog Test at local test only/star certified facility, here in Southern California. I flashed my car back to Stock, then locked it and had zero issues here in one of toughest states. So glad I didn't spend the $500 at Crevier BMW to flash the DME back to its original state. I'll be running BM3 again by the weekend. Whoever reads this, don't stress as it's a non issue.

Thank you all. Can confirm Re-LOCK DME worked! They were not able to detect the ECU was ever tampered with, just failed visual on the AA midpipes

It looks like new versions of ISTA detects quickly (just connecting the wire and reading your car) if you have modified your DME.

Since I have to go to BMW service in a month, I own a B48 tuned with BM3 and my car is still under warranty, I was wondering if moving back to stock and re-locking my DME with BM3 should be enough to avoid ISTA will be detecting my tune?

Or will I lose the warranty if I do not reflash my DME to stock with esys? Or I´m lost even doing that?

Thanks in advance!

You might be SOL. Even when I flashed back to stock earlier this week (MHD), the engine tampering alert was triggered immediately by ISTA.

Don’t forget, the dealer has to prove that your modification is the reason you’re having an issue/caused the failure before denying warranty coverage.

Sorry bro, they’ll flag you as tuned even if you flash to stock. You’ll keep warranty for things other than drivetrain. BMW has gone hardass on tuning. Some dealerships try to help but HQ won’t reimburse them.

Thank you both for confirming my worst thoughts

I was reading a lot about how to reflash my DME to stock with esys, but now I I have one less problem on my plate

Good to know the dealer has to prove that the modification is the reason we’re having an issue/caused the failure before denying warranty coverage, at least I will have a way to go if something happens before 2024 April.

Just checking in to let you guys know I passed smog today using the methods on this post (Norcal). I flashed back to stock and relocked DME -> did a drive cycle -> took it to smog shop and passed.

I did drive the car after flashing a couple times probably around 10 miles and when I checked the OBD before doing the drive cycle, everything was already green except the Oxygen sensors. I still tried to do everything correctly listed on the drive cycle and made sure to not go over 3000 rpm and exceed 60mph. After doing this the oxygen sensors were ready to go.

Before drive-cycle:

In case you're wondering, I used the Veepeak bluetooth OBD-II Scan tool with the Car Scanner App for iphone. I couldn't verify on the app to see if my cvn and calid matched but it seems like it did as there was so issues at the smog shop.

I know this is a BM3 thread, but can anyone confirm what the current status is with the emissions/CVN mismatch issue and MHD tunes? (I'm not familiar with MHD, have had BM3). Is flash back to stock alone sufficient for an MHD tune to pass, or is locking also required (assuming it works same way as BM3)? I'm in NJ.

I have a virgin bench-unlock-requiring DME so trying to figure out the best route (and already own a BM3 license transferred from a previous vehicle). Re-doing a bench unlock would be nice to avoid if possible.... thx

I apologize for not being active the past few months.

You aren't using a tool to match CALID and CVN. The match happens after you stock, lock and drive cycle. As simple as that.

Because I've received a few messages, I'm also stating that I used an Innova 5210 only because it was the cheapest option available to me at that time.

Mine specifically was an Innova 5210. There are many scan tools out there that do the same thing. You just need to see what options each scan tool has before purchasing. It's pretty straightforward when you're looking at a box in a store too vs online where certain details get left out.
