It also has to do with heat. If the car sits out for a very long time and there is heat directly on the iDrive, I believe the iDrive 6 with Touchscreen goes a bit crazy.

Had this happen once in my close to 1 year ownership of my 18' M3. Never had it happen to my 15' M4. If it happens again I'll take it in but there has been another thread about this before something like, "My iDrive is haunted" or something.

Thank you very much for this feedback. Looks like I will have to get mine back to the main dealer ....I just hope it's a know problem to them otherwise Im sure they will want to see it happen first hand before they replace, and based on my past experiences it will become a bit protracted and result in multiple visits to them.once again many thanks for taking the time to help me ...cheers ...Gary
Yeah, I'd suggest getting a video of it happening. When I initially reported it at my first service and suggested it might be a faulty touchscreen they didn't believe it and did nothing. I ended up getting a couple of videos and taking it back to show them. They then diagnosed it as, surprise, surprise, a faulty touchscreen and ordered a new one. Took multiple calls to the dealer and BMW direct chasing it up before it was finally replaced almost 3 months later. Not the best experience.

Sounds like a faulty digitizer (touchscreen). Take it to the dealer so they can replace it.

18 F87 owner here. Found this thread from google.

Experiencing the same issue. Saw it first a couple month ago and just started cropping up again yesterday, and then this morning. No rhyme or reason to where it goes, or when it happens. Am going to try to get a video before I take it in to get serviced. I'm due for an oil change next month anyways.

Mine has now done it twice in a matter of days. '18 zcp M3. Scheduled to take it in tomorrow. In every case was the fix the touchscreen? Kind of hate taking it in and having them mess with my car but as it has happened twice I guess I will.

I have had this happen at least 7-8 x on 2018 built Oct 2017. Thanks for the volume reset idea. Only happens within nav screen view. I have also found if I physically wipe the touchscreen, it ceases to freak out.

I think mine was a Sept. 2017 build. It has thankfully not repeated since the two instances a week and half ago. Fingers crossed. I think if it happened to me 7-8 times I would take it in and have them fix. Did you try taking it in?

This thread seems to hold the answer. Replace the touch screen.

Anyone have any additional information, or perhaps the SIB to share? I can't find the SIB referenced in the M2 thread.

I shared a video of it happening with Service and they have been able to reproduce, but they said they are reprogramming first. Then next step is replacing the headunit? I'm worried that I'm going to have to make a couple inconvenient trips to the dealer, when the solution seems to be well documented as the touch screen.

Reviving this old thread. I have a 2016 F83 M4, and I recently retrofitted the NBTevo ID6 headunit and iDrive controller. Now I am swapping out the non-touch display for a touchscreen display. To avoid buying a touchscreen with this ghost/phantom touch issue, I bought BMW part no. 8709339 (also designated 6558709339), which according to realoem.com is the final version of this part. Mine came out of a 2020 F87 M2, as it happens.

My question: when the dealers changed out your touchscreens, did you receive part no. 8709339? I ask because it appears from your posts that the replaced screen does not exhibit the ghost/phantom touch problem, and I am trying to determine if part no. 8709339 is known to resolve this problem. Thanks very much!

Responding to my own question, I installed the final version of the 8.8" touchscreen (BMW part no. 8709339) and it works perfectly. No phantom touch issues, even in direct sunlight.

While I'm on the subject I would like to recommend this glass screen protector. It works exactly like the Belkin glass protectors do for iPhones. The quality is extremely impressive, especially for the price, and the installation instructions are clear and very thoughtful. I highly recommend it for anyone with a touchscreen who has OCD about fingerprints on the screen and the like. The only potential negative with the protector is that it has a glare if hit with direct sunlight, as would happen in a convertible when the sun is directly behind the car. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B071FR3868...t_details&th=1

Hope this is helpful.

Bumping this thread. I've had this problem with my 2018 M3 since I bought it new. But it seems to be acting up more and more these days.

I typically just hold down the button to reset and go about my day. I rarely drive the car. but now its like everytime I get into it I have to deal with it.

I had taken it to the dealer while it was under warranty and never got any permanent fix. And then time got away from me and now its no longer under warranty.

Is the definitive answer the screen? If so I may take the opportunity to upgrade to the 10" from the X5 if I've gotta spend money either way at this point.

You need to replace the display with the final revision of that part (part no. 65508709339) which eliminates the problem you are experiencing. There is at least one for sale on ebay right now. https://www.ebay.com/itm/266723271271

As I noted above, in my experience, the answer to this question is yes. The earlier versions of the 8.8" touchscreen were susceptible to the behavior you are experiencing. The final revision of the 8.8" touchscreen corrects this problem.

If are interested in swapping out the 8.8" display for a 10.25" display, there is now a much better OEM option than using the F15's 10.25" display and cutting the back, etc., to make it fit the F8x. You can now easily retrofit the 10.25" display from the G3x/F90 using an adapter that BimmerTech sells.

Here is a thread about my experience with this upgrade (as well as that of others on here who have done the same upgrade). https://f80.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=2090329

Thanks brother for trailblazing all that research on the 10.25. I ended up buying the SCALE model of that screen. Snagged it on ebay for roughly 290 shipped, and bought the bimmertech bezel. So I'll be giving it a go once I get it. I didn't want to deal with the crazy coding effort but the lighter effort i'm comfortable with doing as I have bimmercode and the OBD stuff already. I also have the cable for the laptop if I'm having trouble and would need to employ someone's services. But hoping a simple revision in bimmercode will do the job.

Thank you again! Can't wait to get it done.

The touchscreen can fail and this is what causes majority of the issues. Hence they made a few models of the screen would be my guess to fix this. If anyone wants a touchscreen in the UK let me know as I’ve got a mint one.

Have you installed the 10.25" display yet? Post some pics and let us know what you think/if you have any questions!
