Thanks to MFNATIK for the image.

Excellent vid, thanks for taking the time to do this.

I ended up going to position 3 on both of my springs because the trunk was still reluctant to open (damn carbon fiber spoiler weighing it down). Now it opens 100% of the time.

Thanks a lot for the info in the thread.

I've found that the trunk doesn't fully open when it's been closed for some time. When I open it, close it, and then open it, it swings up fully.

That most likely means there's something sticky keeping the trunk down.

On my 2016 M4, the trunk has always popped right open, even after I installed the M Performance CF rear spoiler, but that only weights an ounce or two and didn't seem to make any difference. My wife really likes that feature, which her 2011 335is Coupe doesn't have. On the 335is you release the trunk latch and it just sits there. You have to lift it manually, but it was never designed to pop open.

We took Euro Delivery of my wife's new M3 ZCP on July 18. Imagine our surprise when on the floor of BMW Welt, we tried the kick-to-open feature (my M4 has the CF rear diffuser and no longer does this) and while the trunk unlatched, it just sat there. My wife was disappointed. By the end of the 13 days that we had the car it seemed to open better by itself, but not as quickly as my M4. I'll have to wait until redelivery to determine whether I need to adjust the springs or not.

I was disappointed to find out that BMW has eliminated the trunk floor lid hold-up latch though. Definitely ordering that for the M3.

So interesting. My wife's 18 F80 pops right up with a pep in its step from a kick or button unlock. My 17 F80 does the same on button unlock (no kick because of the vorsteiner diffuser).

My wife's M3 has gone back to not popping all the way open so I watched the video posted above and it was absolutely as easy as the video shows. Now the trunk lid pops all the way open like my M4 does.

While I had the trunk liner pulled back I snapped a photo of the trunk lid spring bracket on the left side and edited it. I moved the end of the spring from position #1 to position #2:

I also checked the spring on my M4 and found out that the trunk lid spring bracket is different on an M4. Here's a photo of the M4 trunk lid spring bracket on the left side. The spring is in the position it was when I took delivery and I haven't moved it, so it was already in the rearmost position, equivalent to position #2 from my post above. The trunk lid has always popped all the way open, even after installation of the M Performance CF Rear Spoiler which weighs 3-1/8 ounces.

Just for clarity, that's postion 3. The open gap above #1 and #3 is postion #2.

Looks like even changing the position it just had enough preload to open up.

I make Springs for living and like to help

I can change the IT of the spring to increase load, or make the F.L. Shorter to increase preload.
I am close to Chicago area, I can make you guys new Springs to try out ( free of charge for mine car enthusiast here ) can't promise quick return because I am busy at work.
Some guys might not drive the car in winter, that would give me a some time to make it.
PM if anyone is interested

I labeled my picture as I saw fit. It doesn't have anything to do with the official BMW diagram and is more intuitive IMHO.

On the M3 there are actually dots next to the different positions that indicate what the "official" position numbers are. The position that I labeled #1 has one dot next to it. The long straight slot above it has two dots. The other end of the lower slot which I labeled #2 has three dots. I didn't bother with the upper slot and just moved the spring to the other end of the lower slot, just like in the video, because it was easiest and solved the problem.

Note that in my other picture in the post below the one you quoted, the M4 doesn't have any dots indicating which position is which.

This thread has been eye opening.

Since delivery my CS trunk has not popped all the way other than on a few occasions. I just figured car was angle in such a way that allowed it to pop. In my garage it has never opened all the way. I will be checking the spring settings.

Hey guys, just found this thread. Is there a trick to this? Am I pulling the spring back towards the trunk, or do I pull it to the side and out first? My spring seems really right and I'm afraid that I'll somehow screw something up.

You can't really screw this up unless you are like the Mountain from GOT. Don't sweat it

It wouldn't budge when I tried.. Do I pull it outwards to the side first?

Just pull to extend the spring. Once the hook is released from the slot, you can move it to a different slot. There really is no trick to it.

Grab the spring by the coil and pull it straight back, towards the back of the car. It will slide from one end of the slot to the other. Watch the video, and look at the pictures in my previous posts in this thread.

It is so simple to do this, I can't possibly imagine how one could screw this up. You don't even need tools!
