Front PSS wear (265/30/20)

Hi !

I wanted to know if anyone had also noticed such wear on the outer side of the front tires?
I often drive in the mountains and the tires are about 4000 miles long. On my ex M3 equipped with 18 inches, wear was mainly on the inner side ... thank you in advance!

Here are pics:

I'd bet alignment is off before tires are faulty.

Hard to say for certain based on the pics, but that actually looks like your tire is rolled over from having low pressure in your tires. Check your tire pressures..?

Yes...
If it's the same on both sides, then it's probably the result of simultaneous impact, one time. Railroad tracks, stuff like that. I'm pretty confident they don't let cars out of the factory misaligned, they've always been pretty careful about that. So you already know you have to have the alignment checked and probably corrected, just be careful where you get it done. Most authorized dealers are pretty good with that, and have good equipment. If you go with an independent, be sure to look at what kind of cars he's been working on, and check his equipment. Personally, I like Hunter. Good luck!

So in my opinion there are a couple of issues that your pictures are showing.

Is this picture of the wheel well liner?

In this picture, you have two items going on. Between the blue lines, the feathering shown here occurs when the tire is sliding and rotating at the same time....like when cornering aggressively, but can also be alignment (Toe) as others have said; the Caster setting can also contribute to this or some combination.

The pattern between the red lines is caused by the tire running continuously on its edge; meaning the top of the wheel is tilted just slightly outward when under normal load and going straight...most likely an alignment issue (Camber), but can be caused by other suspension issues also. Tire pressure can come into play also, but typically shows on both sides (under inflated) or in the middle (over inflated).

This picture is of one of the rear tires off my car showing some wear on the inside of the tire; meaning the top of the wheel is tilted just slightly inward. Both sides are wearing the same and my fronts are showing similar wear indicating most likely an alignment issue for mine. I'll find out early next week when it goes in to have the suspension checked.

The reality is that getting perfect wear on wide tires is nearly impossible. There is always some compromise going on which prevents the tire from rolling perfectly flat on the road.

Good analysis. The last picture brings back fond memories of an E39/M62 I had. Big negative camber in the back with the sport suspension, rears always ended up like that, or worse. Small price to pay though, for a big heavy luxobarge that thing handled like a bat.

Thank you very much for your analysis

I cleaned a bit a part of the front tire today...

Here are 2 more pics...

I will ask my dealer about that asap.

You beat me to it. I was just about to ask if he is rubbing, because the wear pattern is more reminiscent of rubbing than excessive wear from driving.

OP, are you running spacers? If you are, there is not much the dealer can do...

Thanks.
I never used spacer. It seems strange to me to rubb on a full stock car...

have had similar issue (see the 2 pics attached) - excessive tire wear on outer edge of left front tire. no other misbehavior (car is going straight, no vibration from steering etc.). tire pressure is correct. will have the alignment done hopefully to resolve the issue...

Yes we have probably the same issue... My BMW dealer told me that they will change front tires under warranty if it is an alignment issue.
I will keep you current

I've got that front tire replaced and the alignment done, will play carefully with the tire pressure next time I go on track, hope I won't have this problem again

So your car had alignement issue...

My tires are now checked by Michelin... my car had no alignement issue so they gave me free front tires .
I didnt track my car and tires had 6500kms. Never had this on my previous M cars... i will update if Michelin gives me a feedback
