Flappy Paddles Would Not Chill

I was driving across VA last Monday when my MY16 F80 had this issue. I knew something was up when I had AC set at max and venting at mid level and the flappy paddles were not chilling. Stopped for lunch and it came back acting normal as though nothing was wrong. Condensation was built up quite a bit and had poured down slope into a puddle in front of car where I parked. What is the BMW maintenance number to address the issue?

I have this same problem with my 2016 f80, I'm sure I know what's happening here. On long trips with a day of high humidity the evaporator freezes up and blocks the air flow. I turned off the compressor for a few minutes to melt the frost with the fan running. Then push the ac button in to turn on compressor, all is back to normal until it happens again. The humidity has to a certain unknown high percentage for this to happen. Been a year and half only seen this twice, not a big deal if you can fix it a a few minutes. BUT it shouldn't happen at all.

This happened to me in my F30 many times and has happened in many F30 rentals. Only seems to happen on long drives at high speeds in the hot Florida sun. I've pulled over went into a gas station a few times just because it's so hot and then all of sudden it works again. They need to do damn recall. It's very annoying.

Finishing out this thread with the result: Dealer work order says "performed conversion to raise min evap temp", which they say is the fix.

To answer a couple of other posters: Logically I expected that the humidity and/or low coolant might be the answers. The humidity probably didn't help (it was raining), but it still shouldn't happen. Dealer says nothing about adding coolant, and you'd think they would check...

The fix was "performed conversion to raise min Evap temp." AC working fine now, feels like it's blowing colder air?

Cheers

I had the same problem. It is the resistor under the glove compartment. It costs 100 euro and it fixed the problem.
My car is 15' and the new one had an updated design.

Interesting. I've never had this issue. I have made multiple 6+ hour trips.

This happened to me this last weekend en route back home from SC. Turned the AC off for an hour drove with the windows down and then turned the AC back on and magically started working again. Guess I'll be calling my dealer

The last time it happened to me was a month ago. I pulled off the interstate, got a cup of coffee at Starbucks and by the time I got back in the car it was working again. It only needs to sit for 10 minutes.

Why wouldn't it be a recall?

Recalls are only for safety items.

I had this happen the day I had picked up my previous MY16 F82 on an 8 hour drive home. Starting working again after I stopped for like 20 minutes and never happened again in the 1 year I owned the car.

On the return leg, after an hour the AC quits: you can hear the fan blowing, but no air comes out of the vents no matter what the setting. I guess that the system is frozen, try to wait it out for a while, put in the heater, doesn't fix it.

Call the dealer today. "Oh yeah, that's a known problem. There's a sensor in a bad spot, and it thinks the system is freezing when it isn't, so it shuts down the flaps. The fix is to relocate the sensor, there's a new part."

Really? Wish I'd been told that BEFORE the AC went out with four hours to go
Had this happen to me as well on my 2012 F30 on a long return trip from Nashville to Chicago in the summer. I was so pissed. It was a lease scheduled to be returned in 3 weeks so I never took it in to see what it was.

I own a 17 f80 and had this happen on a four hour trip with temp at 86 degrees. Dealership advised me that the sensor freezes over and the fix is either cover or move it, or re-code the car. Technician recoded car and its been fine since.

We did a two month ED last summer and the same thing happened a few times. All of the sudden, air would stop blowing, but you could hear the fan still going. I couldn't figure out if I had a setting wrong or if it was really broken.

Same exact problem. Fan blowing full blast - no air from vents. I've had it happen twice now - both on hot days. Last week I drove to Scottsdale and just when pulling into town it happened - perfect timing, it was 105F. Nothing will piss you off more than no cool air coming from vents when it is 100+... glad to hear there is an easy fix - going for service next week.
