2015 M4 w/MPE Curt #11367 hitch project

So,
I did it on the M235 I had so went at it on the M4. Same hitch actually and pretty much the same process except this one took a bit longer. It had all the sensors and such on the back end. Also my M4 has the MPE installed and has posed some challenges. I have not come up with a work around on the hard riding condition when the system warms up but am still brainstorming. Here are some shots so far. I have not decided on what type of sculpting I will do on the diffuser center so it is not installed as of yet. I will update later.......

Pic #2 & 3 are the pre-gringing I had to do on the back of the tongue so it would not hit on the exhaust can. It rode hard to start with and I was able to achieve a 1/8 inch gap at installation as seen in pic #4 but that all goes away when it warms up. Pics #12 & 13 show the can up against the hitch tongue. That can is way to $$$ to let it ride and wear a hole

I might loosen up the system and see if there is any movement forward possible put it hangs perfectly centered where it should be. Every thing else went well and I spent way too much time trying to sculpt the heat shielding so i could retain it....well as I kept fitting it and cutting up my hands I ended up removing most of it in the end........ That was a waste of time, should have whacked it off in the beginning, just say'n

Thanks a bunch to Ducturd & Dave90TT for their posts on the forum.......I review their pics and comments prior to attacking this project. Thanks guys

What do you plan on pulling with the car? Not sure it'd be a great idea to be towing anything too heavy.

I've considered doing this same thing for both a hitch mount bike rack as well as for towing a small trailer for wheels for HPDE events.

Very nice work

I, too, am interested in carrying a bike rack. Is the grinding required to clear the stock muffler can as well? How difficult is it to remove the bumper, is that something that anyone should be able to accomplish? Great pics and writeup!

I think the stock can has a indentation in the middle that will clear the tongue.....the MPE is square. I have thought about tapping a curve in the can to clear but I think there is a seam welded in that spot

I would have gone with a roof rack 100% but this looks like a clean install.

CF roof doesn't have rack mounts.

Theres suction cup options. I dont recall the name of them. Seen them on here and on a few exotics around town. They look cleaner then any roof rack that we cant install anyways

I had this on my 335 and loved it. Getting ready to order this for my M3. Is the diffuser gently touching the hitch or it more pushing against? I found a rear diffuser that doesnt have a center fit i'd like to install.

Catch: Suction cups is a Seasucker rack and not recommended for CF roofs which I have
s2k750: the diffuser rode hard enough to bow in the middle that is why I cut it. Rode less than it did on my M235 but did all the same. Does not look bad...actually since my car is BSM you can't see shit

The only problem is the MPE.....and I can't live without that

As others have said, this works great for a bike rack or a small trailer for track wheels/tires and tools. I use my hitch for both.

Obviously, some people have an issue with this, and think it's sacrilege to have a hitch on an MBA car. To them. I have one thing to say: fuck off.

I meant no disrespect to OP, I think this mod is pretty cool. I was just worried at first that he might damage his car pulling something too heavy. A bike rack or little trailer will be fine. As far as people having issues with other peoples mods, I agree. They bought the car so they can do as please with it.

Done......except for the exhaust riding against the hitch tongue. I put a rubber barrier in between till I have time the drop the exhaust and do some additional adjustments/grinding/etc. I just have to live with some resonating vibration in the seat of the pants from time to time.

As for the blasphemy of putting this thing on a "M" car. Since I am a competitive cyclist and can only really afford one car like this it but be my do all vehicle. The car would go before my cycling did.....just say'n. Plus it is nice to roll up to races in my rocket

I'll be installing my hitch next week. This is my second install on this chassis(f30 previously). Does anyone debating installing have any questions or would like to see specific pictures of anything?

Final update to close this out. I found and reviewed the BMW install instructions PDF and it turns out the exhaust was not installed to BMW's requirements by the dealer. It was 10mm too far rearward which caused the can to hit the hitch when the system warmed up and expanded at the flex joints up at the engine. I took it off and reinstalled it moving it 10mm forward and it has yet to touch the hitch driving in this 100+ deg heat so i think all is good.
