BMW M3 Sedan and BMW M4 Coupe.

It certainly is amazing how you have not even driven the car , let alone step inside it ? That you are making an issue of the car when all you have seen is some pretty pictures.

There is a lot more to these new additions to the M cabal, they are not extended versions of the 335i or 435i respectively which some are trying to insinuate.
M3 and M4 like any other M are separately engineered and developed so that every aspect remains exclusive to that car, aspects such as brakes , steering , dynamics chassis and of course the engine.
For an M car... It is how it always has and will be.

Its amazing how many seem to forget that this tradition is still as clear as it always has been.

I think the F82 will be the same; especially when people start tuning and modding. I know I for one will miss my E92 dearly but I am still excited about the F82. This is the exact combo I am going to get which is pretty cool for me because I always loved Phoenix Yellow but could never see myself in a yellow car. Even more importantly, I am excited that BMW specifically considered high altitude performance with this engine. That is a huge deal to people like me here in Denver. I have never got to fully enjoy my S65 because of the damn power loss at altitude.

S55 vs Alpina?

Scott26,
I an avid reader of the website/the forum notably your posts for many years.
I have decided to step in now since I plan on making a down-payment for the F80 next week (I live in continental Europe).
What strikes the deal for me is the 21.9 seconds 1000m dash same as 991 S (a car my young kids know well, always complaining about the back seats). Since I need 5 real seats (good bye M6 GC), performance and exclusivity, F80 is the place to go.
I have one regret though: M3/335 engines identical displacements.
At first sight, what the M Division has done for the F80 appears similar to the Alpina B3 warmed-up 335i to the point that the torque is identical (550 Nm) and the power quite similar (410 Hp).
So my question is this, why didn't the M Division choose to offer a 3.2l (E36!) or 3.3l I6 to preserve the exclusivity of a M engine? If it was only a matter of costs, it was a mistake since, as illustrated in the forum, probably all your customers would have gladly pay a little more for that.
Admittedly, it is not a deal breaker.

First of all, we are glad to have you on the forum. You have contributed greatly and it is much appreciated. I am happy with BMW M and like others I already have money down and my M4 lined up through my dealership. I am very excited for the new vehicle, love the direction it is going in, and can't wait to get the keys. The summer can't come fast enough.

Thanks again and happy new year.

The Alpina B3 has 600Nm, not 550Nm...
http://www.alpina-automobiles.com/en...ta/saloon.html

The power delivery also seems to be quite different as the B3 has a lower redline and shorter band. The S55 seemingly has a "peakier" curve. The Alpina cars are more luxurious sporting whereas the M cars are more performance/race oriented. That is probably also reflected in the character of the engine.

With turbo engines, it's easier to achieve the power level of the S55. Even the 428i can theoretically be tuned to over 400hp (and I'm sure someone will eventually). There are numerous 400+hp N55 tunes in Germany from the likes of Manhart etc.

But, one thing is power on paper, another is how that engine delivers the power, how responsive it is and how well it's capable of delivering that power for an extended period of time (cooling etc). That is where some of the extra money you spend on an M car is justified. Not to mention suspension, brakes, transmission etc, etc.

An M car is SOOO much more than just a HP number

thanks for the corporate response. the non bias comments usually come from any car company employee.

but to answer your question how is this reaction so surprising. this is normal. new car comes out and people pick out what they dont like. i know its hard to believe people dont like some parts of the new car. BMW is such a great company that only makes the best of cars. i mean come on its the ultimate driving machine

Really? No center console equals less sporty? Pretty interesting logic there. :-)

Well, E92 coupe with center rear console was a true 4-seater, which could be viewed as more sporty vs. 5- seat utility. Now they are calling the F82 a 4-seater, but it looks like you could squeeze someone into that center rear (sitting on the hump). Not a true 4-seater.

Best of luck squeezing someone in there

Same as the 4 series, I wasn't really expecting it, no biggie for me but I can see how folk would see it as a feature dropped.

I'm loving the new M3/4 can't wait to see them in the metal.

Yeah. Makes it look like bench seating otherwise. What logic were you expecting?

Logic: There is a bitch seat for F8x, therefore E9x > F8x.

Seems legit.

Yeah, wish they would offer a mid option of the big calipers / iron discs.

Man oh man, you guys managed to upset Scott finally after all this time. I have never seen him defend the M cars before. I think its time we need to take it easy with all the S65 vs S55 discussion.
