Yeah your right, you can notice the difference... Nice find... still umhing and ahhing ... looks like I'm probably going to get my OE mid pipe modified. Add an X or H pipe and cut out the secondary cats.. shouldn't be more then 300-400 I'm thinking...

I cut them out on my M3 and replaced them with two straight pipes.

Let's just say - it sounded like a scud missile - Loud but way to much rasp !

yep you need the x pipe, that's what gives the deeper note, simply removing cats just makes this car sound weird - especially when you remove cats from the downpipe

i ended up buying the fabspeed via ebay, one of those things i just gotta try for myself

i also ordered 2 new gaskets - part no. 18307851168

will make some back to back vids

in meantime, here's an mpe run - i'll replicate same run and gopro placement with the mpe + fab

I think the akrapovic evo replaces the secondary cats - maybe why it sounds so deep

Yep Akra's midpipe removes the secondary cats and leaves in a resonator

You have to buy that midpipe separately iirc, the evo is axle back

You need perforated tube mufflers to get rid of the rasp. An X-Pipe gets rid of the farty 6 cylinder dual exhaust sound and makes the note higher pitched and more blended like a single system. V6 Commodores with a dual exhaust and no balance or X-Pipe sound farty like an M3/M4 and they sound more like an inline 6, an Falcon XR6 Turbo when a balance, X-Pipe or single system's fitted.

The M3/M4 should sound more like a Falcon XR6 Turbo that revs harder with the right exhaust configuration.

I'm in the process of doing that.

This farty 6 cylinder sound the M3/M4 makes is a reincarnation of the '70's when they ran dual exhausts on 6 cylinder Holden and Valiant's. The M3/M4 sounds like a Valiant 6 Pack Charger but a lot of guys aren't probably old enough to have played with exhausts in that era.

Has anyone tried an X-pipe with the M3/M4 competition pack exhaust? I've got the M4 pure which has the competition pack exhaust. Doesn't sound half bad and I don't want to spend 8k on an exhaust system.

youtube search for active autowerke (or AA) midpipe

that is most cost efficient way of getting a better sound while retaining stock muffler

I have the AA midpipe on my car, agree with the above its a good cheap-ish (for M cars anyway) mod that improves sound. There is better out there if oyu spend more (akra, MPE, remus) and you can go cheaper by removing secondary cats and putting an x pipe in but i preferred an off the shelf solution.

I found it has reduced rasp and is a deeper tone, its also about 20-30% louder than stock, maybe more than that when you're on it...

The problem with the AA midpipe is there's no mufflers or room for them to get rid of the raspy note as unmuffled pipe sounds dreadful. A single section of 3.5" pipe flows less than twin 2.5" and the AA midpipe makes power from removing the secondary cats, not because of the single 3.5" pipe which is a performance detriment.

To make a twin system sound like the AA midpipe that reduces the fartyness needs an X-Pipe or merge that joins the twin 2.5" pipes for ideally 5" (twice the pipe diameter). Balance pipes or H pipes don't join the twin pipes together for a long enough distance to optimally reduce the fartyness.
