Question Yokohama A052 - camber settings

Just pulled the trigger on a set of 265/35-18 A052s for my 10" Bimmerworld wheels. I've heard these tires like a lot of camber to wear properly - anyone have any experience with a setup that works well with these tires?

My previous tires were RE71-Rs in 275/35, which I usually ran in the -3.0° to -3.2° range for the front, and -2.0° to -2.2° in the back.

I am running -2.8 in the front and -1.8 in the rear. I was getting a lot of outer shoulder wear in the front. If you were getting even wear with -3.2 on RE71Rs, you will need more negative camber for the A052s.
I didnt have any wear issues with the rear tho. It was pretty even all around

Also, these tires really liked high tire pressure for me. I think i was around 40psi hot in the front and 38psi hot in the rear.

I dropped them down to 36psi hot all around and the fronts were too squishy... You should play with them yourself but the high psi felt better for me. I really like the tires, they have some slip before breaking away...

Agree on this - these tires don't have a stiff sidewall like the RE71Rs so they need alot more pressure. Cold 34 and then 3-4 extra for track.

I do like these tires better on the street I have to say. RE71Rs are pretty harsh and very loud.

Thanks guys, didn't think to ask about pressure too, so I'm glad you mentioned it! I'll shoot for 38 hot to start.

I think -3.2° was actually a bit much for the RE71Rs, so I'll start with 3.2 with the A052s and monitor results. (I use a tire temp probe)

What size wheel and tire are you guys running? I've read that the A052 likes to be stretched since the sidewalls aren't particularly stiff... which is why I went with the 265/35, down from the 275/35 RE71R (they are actually almost the same tread width - 9.9 vs 10.0). Hopefully that will mitigate any squirminess as they're coming up to pressure.

Taking pyrometer and pressure measurements after every session and dialing things in, my optimal hot pressures were about 32-33psi front and 36.5-38psi in the rear with A052s at my last outing at Sonoma with the M2. Pavement temp was 120F and ambient was in the 80s.

Front camber was -2.3 and showed a bit more shoulder wear, so it looks like if I can go up to -2.8 it should be fine. Rear camber was -1.8 and it didn't look like I needed any more.

Tire sizes were 265/35/18 and 295/30/18 on 18x9.5 and 18x10.5 TA5R.

That is an extreme front to rear tire psi spread.

What was going on that lead you to settle on such a f/r psi spread?

It was all dictated by the tire temperatures. I probed my tires (outside, middle, and inner) after every session and adjusted the pressure to achieve a slight temp gradient (outside coolest - inside warmest) at the next time I measured them (after the next session).

In an HPDE format when you're not coming into the hot pits and measuring right there this is the best way to ensure more contact during cornering, and it's also how BMW recommends setting pressure based on temp measurements in their racing manuals (likely due to the high amounts of camber being run).

If I had run lower pressure in the rear my outside and inner tire temps would've increased and center decreased, throwing off the even gradient I had (which was only 10F across the tire), resulting in less grip in corners.

I like the logic on the temp gradient... makes sense.

I'm wondering if you needed more psi in the rear because it took more pressure to level out the center of the tread of that wide a tire on a 10.5" wheel.

We had the best luck at -3.8 in the front and -2.8 (I think) in the rear with these tires. Worked really well, but were done after 2 days. (Even wear, not corded, but they were done) Edit - We had the best luck with 32-33H off the track with these tires.

Off topic - We've been using the RT660s and RS4s and the A052 camber setting is too much, we're dialing it back to -3.5 and -2.5.
