X5M Fob Swap

Based on a member's suggestion on an off-topic thread, I went and got my F80 fob modded into an X5M one from Gates Innovations. Just got it back and couldn't be happier! New fob is very nicely weighted and just looks cool. Everything functions exactly as it should... now just need to find someone to cut the key blank for me. Original key was returned to me as well, although it is now non-functional.
Highly recommended!

I don't know about everyone else but I don't want to have to charge my key.

Seems like an unnecessary transition to the inevitable smartphone app.

Funny you should ask... I'm currently searching around to find someone to recut the key. Cheapest I found in my area so far is $80 at a locksmith.

Is this an aftermarket key? Is the silver surround on the fob metal?

I believe it's an aftermarket key. Silver surrounding the fob is metal -- feels cold to the touch

I like the big ugly key fob too, people think I have a regular 3/4 series when they see the key and me arrive away a different look.

Wow, that looks a whole hell of a lot better than the standard key. Thanks for the recommendation and link. I've seen the threads of people swapping them out themselves but it looked way too complicated for me to even try to attempt. I like the idea of the white glove service , I'm going to look into this, my birthday is around the corner so I might treat myself.

I remember when keys looked like this. I don't understand the keyfob craze.

I did this when it was on sale around Christmas for right around $100. The key is nice but I personally don't like it because it is heavier. I have two vehicle keys on my keychain so this just adds too much weight. The same reason people like them is the reason I don't. Just personal preference.

What's the point? Just to look different?

With having the comfort touch entry (or whatever it is actually called), I have my fob in my pocket when I drive, so if that's all the swap is for then I'd find better ways to spend my money.

If, however, the new fob included a sleek runner to cut the RF transmission identifying itself to the car after lack of motion, then I'd be all in, as it would be an additional security measure for parking it overnight and working less about someone snagging it.

the whole point is to move to a smaller FOB, not bigger.

I did the gates switch and am happy

It's all about flexing when you toss your keys to the valet guy at the country club...haha!

My key also tends to stay in my pocket or backpack for work. I know they both function the same, but one looks cool and one looks meh.

Just like anything, I think it's a cool looking gadget and a mod when if you've run out of things to change on your car. I like it, but to each their own.
