I believe you are referring to the Thor plug in and coding. I just ordered mine as it does all of the benefits BM3 does for performance but this coding is chassis specific.

I have F020-18-03-532. Am I missing out on anything by not updating it at the dealer?

Just got the latest firmware update, NBTevo_U193841. (F020-20-03-540). It is a 2018 M4 ZCP F83 manual 6 speed. Does any one want me to check for anything? Drive and steering is a big improvement from 2017/3 software.

I have also updated the Nav using the BMW update site

In Oz here. Just got mine done after I complained the SatNav reset itself and hung for about 30 minutes.
Went from F020-17-11-540 to F020-20-07-530.
Most immediate thing I noticed was in D mode the gear shifts in Efficient were much more aggressive in holding gear than previously. I think the exhaust sounds a little louder as well. This is just from the drive home from the dealer.

Just went from F020-16-03-504 to F020-20-07-540 in my 2016 M4 ZCP 6MT.

Top three takeaways after a couple hours of street driving:
1) Power delivery smoother. Still feels fast and responsive, just smoother down low.
2) Steering feels better. Lighter on all three settings.
3) Dampers feel more compliant (based on taking some rough roads at speed).

Too much traffic to to see how MDM responds... so that's next.

Happy so far. Got exactly what I was hoping for based on reading other people's impressions.

It seems F020-20-07-540 is the latest firmware from M4s. Would this also be compatible with F80?

How would one out of warranty do an update?

You don't have to be in warranty to do all software updates. You can perform some via the console port and a USB. Files can be fount on the BMW website

This is an update of Bluetooth software only.

I have a 2015 m3 on original software, never been updated. The steering pulls to the right, alignment is perfect. From researching on the forum it looks like I need the steering module updated. Can someone tell me if I need to have the dealer do this? Or if I purchase the Thor app and flash myself, will this remedy the problem? If I’m going to spend $300 I’d rather do it with Thor and update to euro MDM etc.

You can pay your BMW dealer to perform the update. Worth shopping around to find a fair price.

Just found out I'm on F020-15-11-505

It sounds like the only way to get an update is from the dealer right?

It's the safest way - you're updating lots of different modules together to get the car to a specific iStep version. You can do it if you can get a copy of ISTA and cables etc. but if you brick something or apply a mismatched set of firmware it's on you. For $200 during a service I'd rather the dealer did it.

I actually like the herky jerky DCT transmission on the f cars. What's not to like? If I wanted a refined transmission, I've would have purchased a Lexus.

Interesting turn of events, I am on a early 2015 version of the software on my 2016 f80 so I asked the BMW dealership about it when I had it in for an oil change this week. They said that the tech recommended not upgrading the software because they have seen issues with it. They said it would be $180 if I wanted to do it but that was enough to scare me away. Thoughts?

... Car is a night and day difference, in a good way from the 2017 software build to March 2020 build. Unlike older models (even a 2009 e92), these newer cars thrive off the latest software revision and changes. If under warranty you can complain of your idrive randomly resetting to get them to flash to the latest, but $180 is not bad. I plan on updating again prior to the warranty expiring.

I would have been fine paying $180 but the fact that they didn't want to take my money to do it threw me off. Maybe they just don't think it's worth the price for them but I already had my car in for service so it is strange.

Reading through this I see there was a big improvement from 2015/ 2016 to 2017.
Are the improvements really that noticeable every year from 2017 to 2018 to 2019?
