Converting Navigation from European to US Maps

I have a decision for military/diplomat sales in the UK. I can opt to have European mapping pre-installed, and convert to US when I move back to the States, but will have to pay out of pocket. Or, I can have US mapping installed from the get go.

Question is, has anyone done the conversion and, if so, how much does it cost to convert from Europe to US? If it's not an exorbitant amount, I might as well go for the European map and get full use of the navigation while I'm in the UK.

I'll own the car in the longer in the US than the UK.

I guess the other question is, is there an alternate way to do the conversion vs. a dealer? i.e. is this simply a coding issue? No clue how the maps work...

Can you just get the Euro maps on a USB stick? I did Euro Delivery for my 2016 M4 in May last year along with 13 other M cars. We all got a USB stick with Euro maps on it. As long as the USB stick was in the USB port in the console when the car was started, it showed Euro maps. We navigated through Germany, Austria, Italy, Switzerland, Netherlands, Belgium, and back to Germany. We took the USB sticks home with us and when the cars were redelivered, the US maps worked fine.

For our 2011 Euro Delivery for my wife's 335is Coupe, the Euro maps were already loaded on the hard drive. When the car went through the VDC after arriving at the port, the Euro maps were replaced with US maps. From what I understand, the process of loading the US maps at the VDC was a lengthy process, which is probably why they don't do it that way any longer.

You need separate FSC codes, but you can switch navigation region.

It is not that expensive (< $100).

The conversion is very simple, I did it myself it's no different than updating your map. You can buy the FSC code with the map itself for about $100. Put the map on a USB and plug it in the car, from there the steps are straight forward.

Stooker, my answer to your question is way late as I'm sure you've already made your decision, but I figured I would chime in anyway.

I was stationed at Mildenhall from Feb 13 - Aug 16. I ordered my '16-M4 through Military Sales which is now the Mildenhall VPC. I was faced with the same dilemma, but decided to go with the European maps because lets face it, getting around England without navigation is a nightmare! I ended up going to Korea next, but did not get the Korean maps loaded. I used the 'Waze' app to get around (for some strange reason Google Maps would not work over there). I just recently arrived back in the U.S. at the end of Sep and just picked up my car from the Dallas VPC two weeks ago. I haven't taken her in to get the U.S. maps loaded yet, but I'm planning to do it next week. I'll let you know how much it cost me. I did a little online research and found BMW nav updates cost around $140. However, I'm not sure if that price won't bump up a little higher if the dealer has to load the software from scratch. In any case I'll let you know.

Enjoy England while you're there. I would trade with you in a heartbeat to get stationed there again. I loved every minute of living there! I'm considering permanently moving there once I retire from the military. As you've already figured out there are a lot of beautiful rural roads to go cruising around on.

Enjoy the M3! I love my M4; it's by far the best car I've ever owned! My next car would have to be a Porsche or something to top her.

Okay, so I said I would have this done months ago. Sue me! It may be too late to help Stooker, but maybe this will help someone else who has the same question. I finally got around to taking the car in to have the American maps loaded to the car. The technician told me that if the software is loaded and they just need to update, then it'll cost $85, but if the U.S. software isn't loaded, then he'll let me know the price. Well, he called me today to reveal the U.S. software isn't loaded, so it's going to cost me $580 to load the software and download updates! Oh well, that's the price one pays for owning such a beast. At least they gave me a loaner (BMW 330 GT) that I've had for the last three days because they're also trying to troubleshoot a metallic sound that's coming from inside the muffler. It's a nice car and the ride is smooth as hell (a lot smoother ride than my M4).

Thanks for the update! I went with the US maps and have been using my phone while in the UK. I move back to the States in June, so won’t be here much longer. Thanks again!

I forget who I used for mine, but it was only $50 and I downloaded the maps myself. Too bad I can’t remember.

Navigation switch from Europe to US

Like a few other posters here, I also purchased a BMW (2015 X) while stationed in Europe and are now in the process of switching my nav over to US. My dealer outside of Seattle just gave me a quote for $780 and I am pretty sure that it should not be at expensive. I am more than willing to do the work on my end, though I am hoping someone can walk me through the process. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Region change for maps

Same issue here. I have a 2017 X1 and a 2018 320i that I bought while stationed in Europe. What options do I have outside of dealerships?

Hi! I'm currently trying to do this going from Korea to the US.

Why are you guys allowing the dealership to charge you? I have buddies who were able to have it covered under warranty. It makes no sense why it wouldn't be a warranty issue.

Unrelated to the maps question, but related to moving from EU to TX specifically, so sorry for the thread creep.

When you brought your car back to TX how were the taxes handled? Im currently stationed in the Middle East, and am looking to purchase an F83 via one of BMW's military programs. I would like to avoid the sales tax hit if at all possible. Basically, I'll be purchasing a (US spec)demo model from a European dealer, where I will have registered the car in Germany in my name before shipping back stateside.

I just moved from EUCOM to Texas about 4 week ago. Just got my X5 here today.

I went down to the DMV here and questioned about this. Because I'm a Texas resident, I have to pay taxes on the vehicle, basically whatever the purchase price was x 6.25%. I'm not in the service btw, I'm retired and now a defense contractor. So yeah, I had to pay the tax on it. Sucks big time.

If you are military, you are exempt from the tax requirement. If you are a resident of another state, I believe you are exempt as well, but there has to be some document (what they told me) showing that you paid taxes on it somewhere (which didn't make sense to me, but oh well).

Quite easy to do. Depends on map which is in the car.

Thanks
