I was just going thru some old photos of mine(hard copies, of course!) and came across a picture of me and an old girlfriend - as were were in Cochem(near the 'Ring) going up an old school "chair lift" for some "coffee & cake" ala German style. When in Rome...

Cochem is a beautiful little town, near the 'Ring and nestled on the Mosel river. Everyone should visit the Mosel. Most tourists go to see the Rhine... bt as far as I am concerned... the Mosel is way more pretty. Especially driving from Cochem Westwards to Luxembourg.

Seilbahn im Cochem...

As you enter Cochem exiting the A48 Autobahn as you drive down the road(hill) there will be a small parkhaus on your left - as you enter the city. Park there and take the Seilbahn up to the top! There is a nice Cafe at the top. You can either walk your way down or take the chair lift. As you reach the top of the "lift" there is a guy that takes your photo.

http://www.cochemer-sesselbahn.de/index.php/chair-lift

Cochem Sesselbahn (chair lift)
Endertstraße 44,
56812 Cochem

There is also a great Castle in this town... you can even stay there, since it's a hotel. Its a nice grand castle!

BURG HOTEL COCHEM
Moselpromenade 23,
56812 Cochem

tel. +49 (0) 26 71 71 17
email: info@burghotel-cochem-model.de

www.burghotel-cochem-mosel.de

My suggestion would be to drive along the Mosel river. There is a nice country Bundesstrasse that runs along it.

Make stop(s) at:

Burg Eltz (Just North of Cochem) or Restaurant & Hotel Schloss Zell or maybe another nice area to visit on the Mosel is about an hour's drive South, called: Bernkastel Kues They(Bernkastel Kues) also have a old castle there, but its in ruins.

Burg Eltz
Burg-Eltz-Straße 1,
56294 Münstermaifeld

Restaurant & Hotel Schloss Zell
Schlossstraße 8A,
56856 Zell (Mosel)

and/or continue onwards into Luxemburg or Trier.

Just saw this today... I've not been here... but this bridge does look cool! While not near Munich... it is near Cochem!

Opened only in October 2015, Geierlay is Germany’s longest suspension bridge, and it makes for a wonderful day's out in the stunning German countryside! The suspension bridge is 360m long and 100m high. Do you dare to cross it?!

The walk to the bridge is 1,7 km or about a mile away. So bring some good comfy shoes!

Here is a video that a friend of mine(Mark) filmed in his M135i last weekend(March, 2016)... it will show you how nice of a road the Tatzelwurmstrasse is. Unfortunately Mark did not start off at Brannenburg - which is quite narrow and I feel the best part of the drive.

Tatzelwurm Pass (Deutsche Alpenstrasse) with summer tires at about 3°C.

Although the drive wasn't too spirited DSC was on heavy work nearly out of every turn... (indicated in the video overlay)

While not a place to visit, it might be helpful to know:

http://stationedingermany.com/automo...ts-in-germany/

Also, the Salzburg area is a bit farther out from Munich but still within day tripping range.

The Grossglockner-Hochtalpinestrasse is less than 2 hours from Munich, I would HIGHLY recommend it to anyone doing an ED.

Here is the link to my thread that I put pictures and video on.

Dackel,
Thank you for your excellent write ups. Between this thread and your alpine pass thread, your posts were invaluable to my ED trip. Thanks for all the help!!

Side note- anyone interested in Hotel Sonne, do it. Excellent little hotel with tons of character and a panache for petrol infused fun. It was the biggest surprise of my trip.

A friend of mine, markymark666 recently participated in a small super car/exotic car drive - thru the Bavarian Alps. Rossfeld Panoramastraße runs around Berchtesgaden area. For those of you who don't know... Berchtesgaden is the most Southern part of Germany.

Driving this part of Germany is spectacular... and I thought it would make for a great ED road tour. So both Mark and I thought you guys might enjoy driving this road: Rossfeld Panoramastraße (or panorama street)

Berchtesgaden is also where Hitler had his summer home and the infamous Eagles Nest(which he seldom used bc he was afraid heights and elevators). There is a museum there now(in Berchtesgaden) about the Nazi's in Berchtesgaden. Former Walker Hotel(US Forces/MWR) use to stand where the museum is located. In front of the Museum you can catch a bus ride to the Eagle's Nest. Parking is located behind the museum.

I would also suggest to drive to near by "Ober Salzburg"(still in Germany) and visit the catacomb(s) tunnels under the "Zum Turken Hotel", a former Turkish barracks in the Ottemann empire times. The tunnels under the Zum Turken Hotel - are super creepy but really cool. Its like stepping back in time, in the bunkers.

Does anyone have any recommendations for places to see in late December? I heard that many places in Europe close pretty much from Christmas thru New Years. I am currently trying to setup my ED trip for around then so any advice would be greatly appreciated

Tourist places thru out Germany will be open. Check where you will be going online to make sure though. The BMW Welt is closed on these days...

24th thru 26th December, 31 December and 1st January

http://www.bmw-welt.com/en/

Many factories do close for two weeks at the end of December.

Where do you want to go while in ED ?

Just received a response from BMW Nurburgring... They say the Ring Taxi is not in operation for the entire year of 2017. Any suggestions of other ways to get a ride on the ring? I really want to go, but figure its best to go out with a professional instead of renting a track car and driving slowly since its been nearly a decade since I have been on a track.

Are you doing ED? The wife and I payed a "pro" driver to tag along with us on our ring laps this summer. Ive played video games which helped with knowing the track but I felt more comfortable having someone that really knows the track ride with us (new car). It was awesome. The wife even took a lap. We hired Andy from RentforRing. Great guy from the UK.

You might try this 'Ring Taxi service. It's not run by BMW but by a private company. Dale Lomas(from Bridge to Gantry) works there.
http://ringtaxi.de/en/

Here is the official 'Ring Taxi...
http://www.nuerburgring.de/en/drives...ring-taxi.html

Perhaps try contacting BMW AG directly...
http://www.bmw-motorsport.com/en/fan...xperience.html

Also... I would expect BMW to switch to M4/M3's since the M5 is out of production. Maybe BMW AG will use the M6 GC instead. ?

Yea I reached out to bmw-ringtaxi@nuerburgring.de and the response was there are no dates for 2017 as there will not be a BMW Ring Taxi during this year. My thought was exactly what yours was, that they would move to the M3 like they did before the F10 came out.

We are going end of March, hopefully I can find something. Thanks for the input, I will continue to research the others.

Park2670 I would definitely contact the RingTaxi.de guys. Dale is a pro driver and the staff there are very friendly and helpful. They mostly cover for the BMW ring taxi when they are not running or run in tandem from the same office at the entry gate of the ring.

Dale and the Ringtaxi.de company are also noted because of this video. Dale is the guy driving the M3. The car had 3 passengers in it.

Thanks so much for the responses.

After waiting nearly a decade for this trip, I am not able to purchase a BMW for Euro Delivery at this time. We are going to be doing all of it except for getting a new BMW.

I have reached out for a Premium Tour of the Welt, Museum, and Factory. Also am working with RingTaxi.de for a day that works while we are in the area.

Very grateful for the help you have provided.

That's cool. You can still see a lot of what BMW and the "other" German car companies have to offer in the way of car museums and experiences.

You can always rent a BMW from Sixt rental car or the like. But Porsche has these AWESOME car tours on offer. Check them out....

I wish BMW offered something like this for people who want to experience the brand but not do ED.

Dackel you learned me something today I had no idea these Porsche tours existed. Kinda wish BMW offered something like this also. Mrs Yoda and I might just try one of these in between our EDs. We lease so every 3 years or so we plan on doing ED going forward. They offer a Burgundy tour which the Mrs has been dying to get to.

I am glad I taught you something new.

BMW really should offer something like what Porsche does. BMW does have pre planned programed routes into the Navi(just use the "blank" keys) but Porsche has a totally "turn key" service for people who want to experience Europe AND a new Porsche model. The hotels are first class and so are the routes. Plus I think Porsche lets you keep some goodies like special Porsche luggage, etc(at least they use to do that).

The Porsche Driving Experience isn't that expensive once you figure in all your meals/hotel fees, and then a premium rental car. I've always wanted to try one of these Porsche tours.
