That's what I thought too. At BMW now so we will see. I doubt they will replace with anything but OEM.

Diagnosis confirmed: spun hub. Now the question is, how much did it slip? Dealer checking if impact is limited to timing or if there internal damage.

Car is 2018, not tuned, has ~22k miles.

Sorry to hear. Did they say why they suspect it to have slipped? So odd since its stock and it’s not like you’re new to the platform.

Btw i know the dealer won’t be able to install an upgraded hub, but maybe you should just buy a CBC and see if they will just throw it on.

Which route would the dealer go. Replace engine or replace crank hub.

Yes, they said they normally see this when someone overrevs or money shifts. I think aggressive downshifts can cause too because I've read on threads where DCT spun hub holding paddles to complete 2 gear downshifts, etc.

My car is manual and it wasn't money shifted (and they would know).

In order to continue with a BMW warranty that have to replace with the bMW designed par. BMW claims there is no issue

Depends on whether internal damage exists. A fair # of people are only seeing timing impacted....hope I'm one of them.

Just got call from dealer. All they had to do was replace bolt and reset timing and they are saying all good. Apparently minor slippage. Sounds too good to be true but I'm hoping that is the case. Will obviously monitor closely during my last year of warranty.

I see others have posted asking for official metrics on this, and while I don't have that, I wanted to add that when I bought my new to me F82 last year and had it coded, the coder mentioned he was seeing way more SCHs in the MY18s than all the prior MYs.

Push them to replace the crankhub too! Who knows what damage there really is unless they can show you pictures of the hub and washer being mint.

I think by bolt he meant crankhub. But yeah replace crankhub. Its not much cus u don't have to drill holes. But removing it out is the hard part.

Hmm if they say its form a money shift or over rev, but your car didn't exhibit either of those, I wonder what they think it is?

Good question and I really don't know. Bought used from dealership last week so I'm wondering if it got hooned on a test drive or prior owner. Car was very clean, 22k miles, lease return, and not tuned...but who the heck really knows.

I'll see how things go between now and warranty expiration. At that time, I'll probably opt for extended warranty or upgrade hub and intercooler.

Luck of the draw. I know people with stage 2 tune with no crank hub fix and no spun hub.

I was tuned for 20k miles with no crank hub upgrade without any issues either. Recently got CBC for E30 tune.

Possible Solutions/Hope all is well

Two days later my new to me '18 manual I bought from same BMW dealership gives me the dreaded "drivetrain malfunction ok to drive w/ reduced power". I stopped car and turned off engine. It cranked several times when restarting and I got same message and finished 5 minute drive home. Dropping it at dealer Monday and thankfully still have a year of warranty left.

Hoping its not spun crankhub but the way it restarted has me worried. Don't have a code reader to see if I'm getting camshaft codes, etc.. Stock power 12/1 UPDATE: confirmed spun hub

Keeping fingers crossed its something minor
Hope everything is turning out to be fine with your car and the warranty. Spun crank hubs do tend to be a problem with the S55 engine, especially if you end up tuning the car. Either way, I would get a keyed crank hub from SSR Performance just for peace of mind. As for the intercooler, from what I've heard, this is somewhat common, which is why I know some people like to replace their intercooler with one from CSF. Better quality, and less likely for this to happen. Kies Motorsports in NJ does keyed crank hub installs throughout the year, so I'm not sure where you're located, but I know when I begin to modify my car, the first thing I'm doing is shipping my car to them for a keyed crank hub install and CSF intercooler.

I think its somewhere between 2-4K, but thats plus installation. If anyone else has knowledge about this feel free to chime in (I am no expert). I'm sending my car to NJ as soon as I get it for a keyed crank hub, just for peace of mind at the very, very least. But also because I plan on tuning it and I heard from others that its not a bad idea.
