You can't go wrong with Castrol 0W40. I sent multiple 5000 mile samples (16' F80 M3)
off to Blackstone with great results. I only switched to LM 5W40 due to the fact that I'm managing 3 BMW's and 2 of them are high mileage and have weeping OPG's. LM's UV dye helps track weepage.

I want to say that I've read somewhere in the BMW manual... something to the effect of "do not use engine oil additives." I've heard that LM makes some good oils (synthenergy comes to mind) but many of the additives are snake oil.

As an aside - I've used good 0W30 or 0W40 oil with a high quality synthetic media filter (WIX) at generous intervals and i've been very happy.
While there is plenty of "snake oil" out there, especially on the shelves of your local auto parts store, Liqui Moly actually has a pretty good reputation when it comes oils, oil additives and fuel additives - but it is always a good idea to do your own research to your comfort level. As far as what BMW says about not using oil additives, I take that with a grain of salt - I think it is primarily the lawyers talking. BMW clearly makes very good, high performance engines. But BMW is a high volume engine producer just like ever other major car manufacturer so there is nothing that special or unique about them.

I have used liqui moly stuff in all of my BMWs, to include when new. I use the Ceretec (every 20k miles is the recommendation IIRC), Jectron fuel system cleaner every 2.5k miles, and the engine flush every 20-30k miles.

What do we think about Pennzoil Platinum Euro 5w-40? Its probably the closest to the BMW branded oil since it comes form Pennzoil and is LL-01

Should be good to go! 5w-40 seems to be the new consensus among top euro shops/tuners.

Safe to use Mobil 1 0-40 European for my S55? This is my first M3 oil change and I have M1 left over from my 911.

yes castrol 0w40 all the way. best cheap oil. dont need LL01 or FE stuff. use thicker oil for our engines and change often, 4-5k miles

I probably would have gone with M1 0w40. I have been a default M1 guy for ~20 years. But when I got the F80 I went with Castrol 0w40. The main reason I went with that was it had been on the LL01 cert list, and I am still under warranty. Its no longer listed ( as M1 is no longer listed ) I might flip back to M1. Just avoid the 0w30 FE variants.

stick castrol, the important part is A3/B4 not LL01 or FE rating. 0w40 is good for hot weather. using M1 burned oil for some reason. i use M1 on non BMW and have so past 20 years, but for BMW and S55 engines i do castrol . good shit lol, far better than thin stupid oil that bmw uses 5w30 pennzoil which burns too after 5k miles
