Experienced lack of braking today on the motorway in heavy rain and temp was near freezing. Terrifying experience and had to use the gears to slow down as brakes were non existent until pumped about 4 times each time after not using for a few minutes on the M way. CCB

It's either malfunctioning on the M car and if it's not Yes I believe it could be coded, brake drying uses rain sensing wipers and camera, abs module and abs pump. I'm not sure why they wouldn't put it on M3/m4

Per the owners manual
Driving in wet conditions When roads are wet, salted, or in heavy rain, press brake pedal ever so gently every few miles. Ensure that this action does not endanger other traffic. The heat generated in this process helps dry the brake discs and pads. In this way braking efficiency will be available when you need it. Sounds like they no longer have the feature and want the driver to perform it manually. |

I wanted to bump this thread. While I don't have a m3 / m4, I do have an X1 35i, and when I replaced the brakes, I "upgraded" to ceramics, and I'm having a similar issue. I'm beginning to think it's related to the ceramic pads.
The OEM metallic pads were very dusty and made a lot of noise. I've always had good luck with ceramic pads through the auto parts stores, until I got to BMW. I was driving in the heavy rain yesterday, and this happened to me. I hit the brakes, and for a second nothing happened, until the grabbed. It felt like it used to when driving a car with front drum brakes. It happened a couple of times, but only at highway speeds when it's pouring. At 40mph, they never get "watterlogged" so to speak. I'm thinking I might just replace the front ceramics I put on. I used Wagner pads. I've always used the Autozone Cmax+, but they don't sell them for the X1. What did you guys ever do about this? |

This is normal for CCBs unfortunately, few times now heavy rain on motorway has caught me out.
You have to lightly scrub the brakes to get heat in them/dry them off every so often. |

1/2021 Update.... The CCB on my 2020 M4cs still suck in heavy Rain..... to stop the car you need to put 100lbs of weight/pressure on to the Brake pedal or wait a good 5-8 seconds for the Water to burn off if you apply the normal amount of brake force.....That's a lot of “Moments of Terror “ so say your prayers while you wait for them to catch..... then you over brake....... Never drove a Car like this before.... In the Rain you need to press these brakes down “with all your might, like your life depends on it.... and then you will be fine!
In the dry weather , whether its 0 degrees or a 100 degrees these CCB are Phenomenal..... there are no better brakes in dry weather.....and I do not need to let ghe brakes gain heat.. while you pray they catch Last edited by mzeed; 01-23-2021 at 06:30 PM.. |

I have CCB's on my F80 and the only time I experience that lack of braking is right after washing it. I haven't had that experience in the rain or not nearly as bad. There is a BMW video explaining the sounds and other peculiarities of CCB's including this as well as a whale sound in slow driving after a car wash. Search "How to use your high performance brake system." I definitely experience that as well. They say you just need to stand on it and that the braking power is the same but takes more force. I brake repeatedly for a bit and they get right back to normal. Actually happened today and does get the heart rate up. Another reason to be careful about letting anyone drive your car!
