I have experienced this issue once on a long drive in my 2016 f80. It's annoying and I will have it fixed... only happened once though and hasn't happened again since.

A/C turns off randomly

On my 2019 BMW M4, I've noticed on two occasions that the "A/C" button turns off on it's own. It's a toasty 81 degrees outside and I have the car set to Auto 68 degrees. I know the car will engage the compressor on/off as needed in Auto. But I only noticed it when the air started to become warm and my first reaction was "crap, do I have an AC leak?" until I look at my AC button and it's off. I push it and it turns back on.

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this considered "Normal Behavior" for the Auto Climate function? No fault codes when this happens.

Definitely not normal. My car stays in auto all the time and I've never had this happen. Might be a faulty switch?

How would I test that?

Stop by BMW dealer and have it checked out. Not normal operation.

A/C problems are still an issue

I have a 2016 328i and found out the hard way on a long trip Saturday. This is the info on my dealership docs this morning: Technician connected vehicle charger, ran short test and found faults for A/C system. Technician found SIB 640613 instructing to code vehicle with conversion to raise minimum evaporator temp. Tech connected vehicle to charger, ran short test and coded vehicle with conversion to raise evaporator minimum temp. Test drove vehicle, ok at this time.

So, still new to this and this is my first service issue (37,890K miles) - should they have changed a part or am I going to regret this computer fix in 24 mos?

Shipping a low dollar item from any online seller will cost you more than buying at Dealer. Only economical way is if it's added to larger order.

"Toasty" 81 degrees? Obviously you've never been to Texas or the southern East coast in summertime.

None of the 8 BMWs my wife and I have owned exhibited this problem - when in "Auto", the green light on the AC button stays lit and we've never had any issues with it turning off by itself. Definitely not normal operation.

There is a known issue involving a poorly located AC sensor. Sounds like you may be in that boat.

81F "toasty"? I've been in Sacramento and Concord when it was 114. Now THAT'S toasty. You should go to Needles or Blythe in July or August, then you'll find out what "toasty" is.

I took it to the dealership but they couldn't find anything wrong.

The ECU will cut the Ac compressor if the coolant temperature is getting too high. This can happen even before you get a warning for coolant temperature. Unlikely to be the cause, but just letting you know, so you can exclude that

The HVAC fan speed automatically deceases when you answer a phone call, on vehicle's past the 2016 MY.

Not exactly sure how that affects the AC shutting on/off..

*Sorry about crappy, cropped copy, this was years ago and I lost the original:*

It's been a few weeks and my car hasn't done it anymore. When I took it to the dealership, they couldn't replicate it.

When I had this issue they didn't have to replicate it. There was a service bulletin for the issue so they went ahead and moved the evap sensor to solve the issue.
