Loud vibration on cold start

Just as the titles says...anyone hear a loud 1-2sec vibration coming from the rear usually a few seconds after a cold start?

Sounds like a bolt from the exhaust vibrating against the heat shield or something. But only seems to be an issue after a cold start. I also have an MPE factory installed.

The vibration is quite annoying and somewhat embarrassing on a 80k+ car! Any input would be appreciated

If they were cracked wouldn't they make the sound all the time? Not just on a cold start?

Definitely didn't think about that. I'll look into it. Anyone have a link of what it sounds like?

I got the same thing and I HATE it. I even get it on warm starts sometimes. I’m checking to see if my AA exhaust is touching the brace, but if that’s not it, I’ll be heading the dealer for warranty trouble shooting. Drives me nuts, and is just so wrong on such a nice car. Let me know if you isolate the cause.

easy. get a long thin flat blade screwdriver, reach around the tire and lightly tap the dust shield, see if that doesn't sound familiar. might be easier to take the wheel off, but you can probably reach the shield with a long enough screwdriver.

Have it check it out with dealer.
Most likely exhaust flaps opening and closing within few seconds. That's normal.

Same thing happened to mine. My MPE sounded like a throaty cowbell at cold start. Dealer said it was a combination of stuck valves and cracked MPE.

The cracked MPE I could see. Warranty that now as they have the revised revision 04 MPE that's braced in the right places so it shouldn't happen again...hopefully.

I'm almost out of warranty and may need to brace the muffler on my own.

I dont know if its the same noise but I have remus non res mid pipes on stock muffler. When I do cold starts with valves open after about 3 secs for a duration of 4-5 seconds it sounds like a someone is banging a empty steel drum with a hammer at a rate of 200 strikes per second, pierecing loud, have to plug my ears or close my valves. Then after about 10 seconds into the cold start cycle it disappears.

I have loud rattle during cold start. I think it's coming from the exhaust valve flaps. It sounds like someone threw a roll of pennies down a garbage disposal and turned it on. SOOO loud!!!

I actually figured mine out!

It's the right exhaust tip on the drivers side vibrating against the mp diffuser! I've noticed In a lot of pictures with the mp exhuast the pair of exhaust pipes on the driver side is too far to the right. I'm not sure if that's just an error with bmws instructions for install or installation error.

But I had to put some velcro or a soft pad on the inner curve of the carbon fiber diffuser and it stopped! I'm taking it to the dealership that installed it later this week. Hopefully adjusting the exhaust pipe position won't be too difficult.

I'll try to post some photos later.

It's part of the nuances of the MPE. I've had the MPE since day one on two different F80's and had the same experience. Don't sweat it!

Ok the vibration on my car is not coming from the exhaust flaps. It's coming from the Exhaust tips. What a horrible design. Think I'm going to have to order different tips or try silencing these.

Mine does this too. The rattle only last about 1 min at start. Ive had cracked can before.... repaired them. But Sound still persist... i'm convince its the valve flaps, but dont know how to address it.

My cold starts are a bit embarrassing... can't believe how loud it is.

I stepped out of the car one morning and watched my exhaust to see if it was hitting the diffuser like someone posted in this thread. It wasn't, but I was surprised by how much movement there was on the tail pipes! The whole exhaust was very visibly vibrating at an insane frequency. I'll try to take a video...

I’m told my momentary rattle during cold start is the waste gates. Not sure if anything can be done about it, but I absolutely hate it.

Mines more of a high frequency rattle followed by an even higher frequency buzzing intermittently. This all occurs for the first 30-60s and then it's gone. I assume the rattle might be the wastegates or valves. But the intermittent buzzing--I'm almost certain is the diffuser rubbing up against the carbon fiber tip. Is there an easy way to post video?
