18x11 Track Rear Wheels - what tires?

I'm curious to see what other people are using (or planning to use) with 18x11 rears for track season. With the release of the Apex EC-7 18x11 ET44 I expect this will be a popular wheel size moving forward.

For track tires, I see the Nitto NT-01 is available in a 305/35/18, which should be a nice fit for that wheel.

For extreme performance street tires, I don't see much that fits great. I see the NT-05 available in 295/35/18. I don't see too many other 295 or 305 section tires though. What are you using or planning to use? How's the fitment and performance?

I'll also be going with NT01 in 305/35R18

There is also the option of R888 in 305/35R18.

The NT01 and R888 can also be had in 315/30R18 that also fit with the 18x11ET44 EC-7.

Are those tires extreme summer tires or R comps?

The NT-01 is an R-Comp. The R888 is a hybrid, its R-Comp type rubber cut into a streetable tread. Not great in rain/weather though.

I consider an "R-Compound" to be a tire who's primary design intent is track use but is still road legal to be able to drive to and from the track.

Both the NT01 and R888 fit that bill. They are both advertised as "competition" and/or "track" tires. The Nitto RA1, BF Goodrich R1 and Michelin Pilot Cup for example also fit that bill.

Semantics here, but I call NT-01 and R888 "semi-competition" tires. They are both R comps with treadware ratings of 100, although the two behave quite differently. The R888 is a bit grippier when new/fresh than the nt01, but falls off more rapidly as you wear down to a "less sticky" rubber around 20 heat cycles. The nt01 is more consistent and is almost as fast even when you run it to the cords. Nt01 is quiter than the r8888 too.

Bfg r1, r1s, Hoosier r/a7, hankook c71, etc I call "competition" tires. They have treadware ratings of 40 and technically are street legal because they have a DOT number, but really should not be driven on the street. IMO they shouldn't really be used on a street car.

NT01's are just as fast worn as they are fresh, maybe even faster. Just when you think it's time to toss them they go and set your fastest laps of the day.

They are my preference between the two.

Exactly the reason I love them so much. They are essentially immune to heat cycling. I set many of my fastest laps with cord showing on my NT01s .

I would like to try nt01's but because I'm a begginer want something that is more chatty like street tires. Are the nt01 chatty, or when they let go are they pretty quiet?

As a beginner, it is probably best to stay away from R-compound tires for a little while. I would start with extreme performance tires first.

Most R-compound tires do not give an audible warning as they start loosing traction. However, relying on that audible warning is not appropriate for performance/track driving. You need to gauge the grip level from the feedback the car is giving to you through the steering and seat of the pants.

What's a good size for wheels and tires assuming NT01S and Apex EC-7?

And rough estimates for price for fronts and rears?

For that setup, 18x10 +25 front and 18x11 +44 rear wheels. 275/40/18 front and 305/35/18 rear tires. Fits standard brakes, doesn't fit over the CCBs. Need 19s to fit over the CCBs.

EC-7 wheels: http://www.apexraceparts.com/apex-products/EC-7-Wheels/
NT-01 tires: http://www.1010tires.com/Tires/Nitto/NT01

Also, I prefer to buy things separately and never add up the total cost. Plausible deniability. If I knew the total cost of the things in my garage I would probably never have gotten them.

Thanks, I priced them, not too bad, maybe 3k for a full set of wheels and tires. The rear NT-01s in 305 are out of stock, though.

Funny reading some of the reviews, one guy who supposedly put them on his 4wd Denali was complaining about complete lack of grip in the snow. I'd say that guy was either trolling, or full on retard.

I get mine off of ebay. Discount tire sells them there for cheaper than in store. Plus, there's no tax or shipping fees.

Here's a set of two for $512 shipped...

Ordered the tires, too good a deal to pass up. Got the fronts and rears. Now I need to find a good deal on the wheels.

I'll be running 275/35R18 in the front (not /40). I find it keeps a better front-rear diameter stagger with the 305/35R18 rears.
