Nope, Shell Helix Ultra 5W40 all the way(for the F80)!
You don't need a 0W it doesn't get cold enough in AUS and they are generally not as good as 5W for (from memory the NOACK which reduces carbon on direct injection engines) Shell is the oil supplier for BMW, so it's probably not a lot different from what the dealer would use, which is probably a 5W30 (Helix ultra comes in that too if you want to use a 5W30) EDIT If you are asking for your E92 M3 aren't they supposed to use a much heavier oil like 10W60? If Edycol says so then it's good. Fourth post on this thread has his approval.

Shell Helix 5w40 is a very stout oil for the F80 M3. I remember I had ridicolous oil consumption with the Penrite 0w40 when i was using it something like 1L every 3k kms. As soon as i switched to Shell helix 5w40, it hasnt dropped at all from the oil level reader in 4k kms.

From all the research I have seen the Helix ultra generally comes out pretty much on top, Shell is the oil supplier for BMW and you can usually buy it on special at supercheap for $40/5L, I'm not sure why you would want to use anything else. |

You might what to think about it Edge is no longer BMW LL01 approved, so if you are still under warranty, you shouldn't use it and in general I would not recommend using anything that doesn't have BMW LL01 approval for use here in Australia.

"Shell PurePlus Technology is a revolutionary process that converts natural gas into crystal-clear base oil with virtually none of the impurities found in crude oil. Base oil makes up approximately 75-90% of motor oil and so this is a significant step-change in the composition. Shell PurePlus Technology produces base oil that provides enhanced viscosity, friction and volatility performance compared to more prominently used traditional base oils. This means it helps extend engine life, reduce maintenance costs, reduce oil consumption, enhance fuel economy and enable better engine cleanliness." |

FWIW I'm using the genuine BMW oil 0w-30 LL-01 in mine at the moment with no issues. I believe this oil is just rebranded shell oil anyway.
Next oil change I'm going to go to a 0-40 or something like that as advised by a repeatable BMW specialist here in W.A |

I'm not sure there is any definitive list, I did a bit of checking with the major manufactures web sites for local products with LL01 certification and it seems some are listing it again: BMW oil from dealer (manufactured by Shell) Castrol Edge (AU has it for 5W-30 A3/B4, 5W-40 A3/B4 called Edge Euro internationally) Shell Helix Ultra 5W-40 (USA: Pennzoil Platinum Euro) Shell Helix Ultra x 5W-30 (USA: Pennzoil Platinum Euro) Valvoline SynPower 0W-40 Manufacture's product webpages that no longer list LL01 approval Mobil 1 |

Are you getting this from TIS/ISTA or from the manufacturer website?
The list I saw was from a newish version of ISTA that showed the new Motul X-Cess Gen2. Was hoping there would be an online updated version of the list. |

Not sure why you would want to use anything other than Shell, but if you do, contact BMW Australia to confirm it is on their approved list. |

I think it's generally a good idea to use BMW approved oil, even if out of warranty if there is a recall/engine failure BMW Australia would be more willing to provide goodwill repairs if you have used approved oil. I just make the point that Shell Helix Ultra is LL01 approved(Shell make BMW branded oil), is easy to source as is locally available at Supercheap for a reasonable price, and seems to be highly regarded at sites like Bobistheoilguy. |

I was interested if there was a new/good single info source for this. I am always interested in learning more about these things.
I'm not against using the BMW recommended spec on certain things, but I'm not for blindingly following their recommendation. Eg, LL01 standard was re-drafted to be more targeted towards been more fuel efficient as opposed to been more protective/reliability of the engine. Yes, I am talking about the LL01, not the FE draft. Hence why, preference/requirements may differ from BMWs official. |

Mobil 1 no longer has BMW LL01 approval so you should not use while under warranty as BMW would deny any engine claims and probably not recommended to use if out of warranty.
