Order now or wait for comp pack?

Hey everyone,

So I've decided that my next car will be an f80 M3. However with the lease on my current vehicle up at the end of November, I have to move somewhat quickly.

My question is - should I just go ahead and order now or hold out until the comp package is released? I understand that the LCI just came out for the M3 which is great, but I'm worried that the comp pack will come out and blow things out of the water. Any thoughts on what I should do / if the comp pack will be a huge upgrade?

Thank you

Based on previous generations, I doubt the CP will be a "HUGE" upgrade .

If you want/need the car now, just get it

I would much rather order now and get the Dinan Signature Package for a few dollars more-from my Dinan experience it would be a major upgrade and will leave any comp package in the dust.

Competition Pack allocations will be rare at first, so that could add to the wait/frustration.

+1

You don't even need to get the entire signature package; get the upgraded parts that suit your wants. For more power, stage 2 and drop-in filters can be had for <$3k. Coilover suspension is even less $.

Going this route doesn't subject you to the 666 style wheels on the ZCP, as well. Most of us will agree, that's a huge plus.

Agree with all.

It is likely containing three components:
  • Cosmetic package - which you'd be able to do yourself
  • Suspension upgrades - again there are better option, as ststed
  • Power options - Minimal HP/Tq upgrade (I don't think this likely).

All of these can be addressed in a manner that allowsfor retaining warranty.

Also, who wants $5k worth of brand new wheels sitting in their garage because they hate them? There are better options and you can enjoy now rather than wait.

The one this that would make me regret not waiting (for me) is a very unlikley addition of seats that would allow harnesses (have holes in the seat back portion).

Going by the e9x you will be waiting around for a while if you wait for zcp. You are better off getting the car now and then when it's time to turn in the car the zcp would be out already.

Seeing the latest spy shots with what looks like a test but complete ZCP vehicle from the production line I'd personally wait. I think M5 owners that upgraded from a pre ZCP to a ZCP noticed a significant difference. I would assume a similar experience with the F8X. A little patience could pay off this time. As other has said, it's an option not a new model and cars should be available immediately for order after release with no new price gauging. Don't hold me to it but I'd be surprised if the option do not appear before Christmas.

With your lease being up at the end of November, you better put in an order ASAP with a dealer that has an allocation. M3 production is very low and at this point most dealers are without allocations through Sept/Oct.

As a former e92 comp pack owner and current 2016 M3 owner, I would recommend just ordering now. The main selling point on the e9x comp packs (at least for me) were the wheels, which on the new one are downright ugly.

Also for what it's worth, there have been a few unconfirmed reports that some form of ppk may be offered en lieu of the comp pack.

^ this. In previous generations zcp was all about the wheels. I think if rumors hold true and this is released with the 666 wheels maybe a slight power bump and maybe slightly lower suspension for likely $5k it's a pass in my book.

You will be LUCKY to get a regular M3/4 ordered in time for November delivery, never mind waiting for a tooth ferry to bring a mythical comp package.

In all likelihood, you will end up paying above market just to grab onto a September allocation that would have a chance of getting delivered to the US by November. If that fails, just have to troll the dealers' inventory and settle for whichever car is closest to what you would have build on your own.

Long story short - you are nearly out of time if you want an M3/4 by November, no time to wait!

This!

Also in the history of the M5 there were no power gains but this generation changed that.

I hope (hope hope hope) ZCP M3s will have more power as well as more goodies than suspension and wheels.

I agree, the wheels are ugly and I will most likely swap them out to old ZCP wheels. Between the suspension and possible power tweaks it is worth waiting for me just as I did on my E92.

If OP needs a car by Nov, he/she should of ordered it BTW.

Just order now. This nonsense about waiting for the competition pack is generally a waste of time. If a comp pack comes out that you really must have, you can always order one later and swap out your current lease. Only those buying should even consider waiting.

The car is likely better than you are a driver right now.

Well my thinking is that I could always extend my lease and order more miles on my current car if the competition package is really worth waiting for.

Also, I'd be doing a select finance on the M3. I did it years ago on my 335 and it worked out great.

I'd post the question over at the M5 and M6 boards as well. I would think the F8X ZCP will be much more like the F10 M5 ZCP than the E9X M3 ZCP, controversial wheels and all

Or do a short term, 2 year, lease and plan to get the comp package car when it's up. Likely around that time (or maybe a little earlier) so it probably works well.

Not according to my dealer. Assume the engine gets a tune, it is reasonable to expect BMW will only have a limited amount they can support/fulfill on top of regular M3/M4 orders.
