I have done an average of about 8 weekends at COTA per year, some of which have had both cars double tracked by friends and family. The double tracked days were 4-8 sessions a day both days. I’m running consistent 2:28’s due to traffic but both cars are sub 2:25 capable (optimal times). Neither here nor there to be honest. I was merely pointing out that, with proper care and some due diligence on the cleaning front that good dampers can have decent rebuild intervals for the average enthusiast.

I understand this can come at a risk as well with mechanical failures/possible other on track issues, etc. Especially when you are pushing the car.

Right now I do not want a full blown race car with a truck and trailer. Eventually I will get to that point but a dual duty track car that I can cruise around town with is exactly what I am looking for. Finally with the GTS I have the HP to hang with the faster cars like the GT3's. As the E92 I had was heavier much less hp and I still was close to most of them.

I think BMW did a great job with the GTS and it was always underrated in my eyes.
I agree 100%. Driving a street car to the track, spending multiple days thrashing the hell out of it for a few days, and then drive it home for daily/weekend duty. The best feeling is when a P car owner approaches you after a session to see what power mods you’ve added because you caught/passed them on track. My first trip to VIR was in 2005 in my ‘03.5 e46 M3. The first advanced group session of the day (my first time on the full coarse) I chased down a fully stripped and caged 997 GT3 with massive aero. After the session he walks up to and asked which supercharger did I have installed. I told him it was a NA s54 with SS headers + Carbono intake + Larini hfc midpipe + UUC muffler and an AA stage 2 ecu tune + Moton CS suspension + AP Racing brakes. He didn’t believe me so I opened my hood fully (it was only partially opened) and showed him there was no SC. He then asked me if I was a member of the VIR country club and I said I’m not & this was my first visit to VIR. He walked away with his head down mumbling something I couldn’t make out I know it’s about skill level and seat time but it’s still an awesome feeling to catch/pass P GT cars on track

Engine mods made me laugh, it was easier to tell him that you had 3-4hp more than stock, he would have been more angry

Yesss!

I like it when guys with NA tell about engine mods! There is a case of an owner who spend $10k in a Renault 2.0 NA and the car measured 3whp less than stock power on dyno.

His face must have been a drama

I know. That’s one of the pluses with BMW switching to FI - $1k will net you ~100+ whp/torque instead ~10 whp/torque.

My s54 mods netted 35 whp peak on the same dyno. I bet most of it came from getting rid of the stock cats. Unfortunately, I was an early adopter to the e46/s54, several years before cams, CSL plenum/intake + Alpha-N tuning. When I started working with BW, James still answered the phone and called post-purchase to check on whether you were a satisfied customer.
