Anyone else dumping the M3/4 for a Cayman GT4?
Well, until last Wednesday, I was super happy about my M4 ED on April 8 in Munich. BMW M cars have been the only cars for me for the past 14 years, etc.
Then I saw the Porsche Cayman GT4. It was love (lust) at first sight. I immediately ran around to several local Porsche dealers. Some were more helpful (Porsche of Plano) than others (Park Place Porsche). I ended up in the #6 spot on the list for a dealer who PNA says will likely get 8. The problem is I now have 2 cars on order--the M4 and GT4--and can't keep both. And the GT4 won't enter production until July, and most likely mine won't enter production til late fall or so since I'm not at the top of the list. So if I cancel my M4 order it doesn't send a great message to my BMW dealer who I've got a great relationship with, and it leaves me stuck without a car for a 2 week ED. Depending on what trade value my Porsche dealer offers, it looks like the most likely scenario is to take ED of the M4 in April, keep it for a couple months once it comes back to the states, then trade it in against the GT4 (it'll probably have 3000-4000 miles on it at that point). Anyway, just felt like seeing if anyone here is considering dumping their M3/4 for a GT4--from what I've been reading on several forums (including this one) it looks like the GT4 may be making converts out of a lot of people. I love M cars, but it feels like the GT4 is in the spirit of how M cars used to be--6spd, NA engine, very raw and much lighter. Parker |

This makes no sense. You're going to buy a new M4 so that you can use it on ED, then wait 6-8 weeks to take redelivery, so that you can trade it right back in for a new porsche??? And probably lose $10k in depreciation? Why don't you just rent a car and do a regular european vacation? And, who the fuck cares if your BMW dealership loses a sale... they'll get over it.

however, the cayman gt4 is nothing like how M cars used to be. -it has two seats -its mid engine -its a dedicated sports car platform, not based on a regular commuter car model -it is lighter than any m3 outside of the original e30, and 450 lbs lighter than an e46 m3 -its much more expensive than an m3/4 -it has limited creature comforts, while the m cars are typically tech laden and focused on DD comfort to a fairly significant degree its a dedicated sports car, which the m3 has never been. for that purpose, it seems like a great car. but to me, the m3/4 is not comparable to this car.

Two different cars but I would NOT do the ED just to maintain a relationship with the dealer. That makes no sense.

I can make things right with the dealer without doing ED. They already said it isn't a big deal.
My main concern is having to spend $4-5k (I already looked) to rent a fun sports car for 2 weeks in Europe. Plus I'm supposed to pickup in Munich and dorp off in Nice, which may be hard if I rent a sports car. If the trade-in value estimate comes back lower than I like then I will go ahead and cancel the M4 order. But it'd be fun to still do ED in the M4, keep it for 2-6 months, then get into the GT4. I'm not buying this car because I need a specific type of car or even because I need a daily driver. I just want the most fun for my dollar. And it seems on that basis like the GT4 might be the ticket.
I've got other cars to drive (Expedition KR, e39 M5, and a Ferrari 360). I was just getting an M4 or GT4 to have another 'fun car.' Parker |

Gt4 with min option is 90k plus tax. Close to 98k otd. You gonna loose least 10k on trade in, plus 20k extra in gettin gt4. And even when they tell you they will get 8 allocations, god knows its gonna take a long time until it gets to you.

I've had my M3 since June, and when I saw the Caymen GT4 I instantly fell in love. It checks all the right boxes for me, and I'm considering replacing the M for this car. The M3 has been a great car, but I don't need any of the creature comforts, back seats, or DD features it offers. If I was in your situation and haven't taken delivery of an M4, I would go with the GT4. For someone that has already taken delivery, it doesn't make much financial sense to get rid of the M3 for the GT4 so soon.

I'm one to not want to live with regrets....so....
If you keep the M and pass on the GT4 will you have regrets? If you pass on the M and get the GT4 will you have regrets? Of course the assumption is money is not a major player here. Get what makes you happy and move on. If you don't, YOU will have to live with the regrets and that does not make for happiness. Just MHO |

If it's even an option, drop the m3 order and commit to the gt4. If I had no kids I would be in a gt4 for a daily/fun car!

Not even a little bit. Totally different car and doesn't remotely work for my needs (I want and need 4 doors), lovely though it may be. If you do this, enjoy - GT4 does look sweet!

Who wouldn't want that GT4, it just looks amazing and you know Porsche will have got it spot on.
For me the number of seats and lack of DD ability kill the dream.....but one day a car like this will have to be the weekend and track toy alongside a daily diesel or hybrid. Superb car and I'm looking forward to seeing some comparisons to the lower end 911s that people have been clamouring for the Cayman to take on!! To all with deposits down on GT4s, congratulations! I'm green!

My M3/M4 is being built right now, and I dropped the order yesterday. Got my deposit back.
I'm keeping my F30 328i for DD, and just dropped the hammer on a large deposit for the GT4. It's gonna be a long time before I get it, but the retention value on the GT4 is going to be much better in my opinion due to low production volume and high demand. I unfortunately had to drop a very large deposit to actually secure an allocation. |

100k for a Cayman... thank you very much... as a dedicated sports car, a z06 will mow this... not that i would buy either.

If you haven't taken delivery of the M and you really want the GT4 just drop the M and order the GT4. As others have posted you will lose a ton of money. Maybe you don't look at this this way.
Personally I want to add the GT4 to the garage to complement the M. Price wise it isn't that much more than what I paid for the M. These are 2 totally different cars so if I do add a GT4 it is a different experience. |
