Is it better to use paddles for roll racing..

Is there a way to put the car M3/DCT back into auto shifting after starting of a roll race in manual mode or just use paddles to shift?

Yes there is, just tap the shifter to the right and you are in auto once you go wot. The downside is it will go to the first level setting and will drop out of level three if you are in that during manual mode.

Have you tried bumping the selector be into “D” once going WOT from “S”?

With my Alfa Romeo Quad, that’s what I would do. Keep the transmission is manual mode, 1st gear, than back into auto upshift mode @ WOT before 2nd year upshift.

That's what I thought. The only way to get on a 40 roll in 2nd gear or 3rd 60 is having it in manual.. so I thought after punching it if it would be best to shift back to auto shifting without messing with the settings

Can this transmission not just be left in auto the whole time with fastest shift setting, then just pull the downshift paddle until you hit the desired gear, then hit it and auto upshift? If not, that's friggin quirky.

Trying to see if someone does this or if it's possible staying in same settings

Not necessarily.

When you toggle between S and D modes, it will go to the last Drivelogic level that was used in that mode.

So what you need to do:
  • Put the DCT in D mode
  • Set the drivelogic to D3
  • Put the DCT in S mode
  • Set the drivelogic to S3
  • Manually select the right gear to start to roll race
  • Go WOT
  • Slap the lever to right to go in D mode

The DCT will be in D3

As soon as you pull on a paddle, the DCT goes in S (manual) mode.

And no, it’s not quirky, it is what makes the most sense for the majority of driving conditions.

OR just set it in d3 and on the third honk mash it to the floor, it will jump gears, spin your hub and cost you thousands

Idk, I respect your point of view, but to me it's dumb that pulling the paddle forces it into a manual mode that won't upshift automatically. It makes the toggle between S and D on the shifter redundant.

If I was designing this logic, I'd keep it all the same with the exception that pulling a paddle while in D does what other autos do - changes the gear with temporary full manual control that will revert to auto operation at redline or after a period of time while cruising, with steering wheel straight, and low throttle/brake input. 99% of other autos do this, even dual clutches. It gives the same exact control as it does now, where you can throw it in S mode when you want no auto shifting, and the convenience of every other auto with paddles when in D mode.

Came here to say this, nice way to blow up your engine, shift your own is the safest policy

Too much to think about, I'm not smart enough for DCT

It’s been a while but I recall D3 setting holding the gears to be in the powerband even on the highway and being really quick to downshift if appropriate when going WOT.

Not a bad setting for when you think there’s an impromptu roll race about to go down

The DSG on our RS3 does what you describe and I hate it when it does

I am perfectly happy with that logic on the M-DCT. That's one of the better feature of the DCT, is that it is not programmed to behave like any standard automatic, it more oriented toward performance driving. I find it so much more intuitive than the setup on our RS3. And yes, using the shifter to go in S mode is redundant, just as the shifter is redundant in itself for changing gears. However, only the shifter can be used to flip to D mode.

I prefer to shift for myself. The shift lights are very well programmed, they will tell you when to shift for optimal acceleration when you are at WOT.

yeah just shift yourself. maybe get some practice doing highway runs so you're not bouncing off the redline. Even if you shift early by 100-200rpm I doubt it will make a significant difference.

This. I have both M1 and M2 set to auto to quickly go back without having to press right on the shifter. The DCT goes into manual just using the shifter/paddles anyway.

I rarely use D mode at all. So for me, M1 is Efficient/Comfort/Comfort/MDM/S1 and M2 is Sport+/Sport+/Sport+/MDM/S2. In the rare occasion I use D mode, I use D1, which is the default.

I actually drive in Manual most of the time too.

However, my M2 is set to: Sport+, Sport+, Comfort, MDM, D3. Since I shift manually anyway, it will automatically set the DCT in manual on the first shift.

But when I hit traffic, I want to be in Sport, Comfort, Comfort, DSC, D1. So one press of the M1 button and I'm all set. If I set M1 to manual, then I'd have to also push the knob right. It's just an extra step I like to skip.
